I've seen more and more places putting signs up that say things like "Credit and Debit cards only, No Cash, No Checks."

My question is how can this be done?
Is it (can it be) legal?

I thought cash was "legal tender for all debts public and private."

In Duncan, Wrights Steakhouse out by the Halliburton MFG plant has a note on each menu. Paying cash gets a discount. I don't know how much as I dont carry cash anymore. That's the only place I've ever seen, besides a gas station, offer a discount for cash

I knew a gun store that did that. The credit card processors take their cut off the top, so they were making more money on the deal than even the Gov. Walters Defense Fund (aka OTC). He ran the numbers on a $1K rifle he sold, and after he paid the vig to the shylocks, err, credit card processors, he lost money on the deal. The shylocks made out like a bandit, though, so he started pricing things at the credit card price, with a posted discount for cash purchases.
