Looks like a another nice project for you.

Nah, it belongs to a family friend; she got it at a yard sale. I asked her if she wanted me to clean it up; refinish and reblue, but she said "just a little clean-up is all". I'd like to find a trigger guard for it and then, make her a wooden plaque to hang it off of over her mantle.

Please check to see if it is loaded.

Yes! Check to see if its loaded! I had a neighbor with deep roots that inherited the family homestead. His 4x(?) great grandfather received it as recompense for fighting in the Civil War. He built a homestead and lived on it til he passed around the turn of the century (1900) He retired his war musket and hung it over the fireplace but never unloaded the final pack and ball. That musket stayed on the mantle til sometime in the mid 80's when my neighbor, as a kid, started asking about it. They took it off the mantle, wrapped it in a blanket and transported it 85 miles in a rattle trap pickup to a dealer who knew about CW era weaponry. First thing the dealer asked was if it was loaded...lol. They checked and yep it was loaded with a .50 ball. The dealer just shook his head and unloaded it for them. He said it was surprising it didn't go off during transport as it cocked and ready to go off. My neighbor said that was his first lesson in firearms and wont carry a loaded weapon that is cocked or unsafe to this day.

Looks like a Hawken. Should be able to find a trigger guard fairly easy if it's a CVA. Easier if it was a Thompson Center.

ETA: Are the ferrules for the ramrod on it? Hard to tell since the pics won't expand but there should be two.
