My poor doggo is at the vet. She's sick. :(

tl;dr - don't leave mushrooms in your yard for the dog to eat

So we went for years without a dog, finally gave in to The Boy's begging and got him a German Shepherd last year about this time. She has become a member of the family, we love her to pieces and she is a ton of fun.

Spent a good amount on buying her from an established breeder. She's eligible, but we never registered her. Spent a TON of money on training, and overall it's paid off, she's pretty well-behaved.

The last week or so she's been a bit more... I dunno, anxious, I think. She's been chasing her tail a LOT more, actually been pulling on the end of her tail a good bit, which is new. She's never been a good eater, we have tried all numbers of different types of dry foods, recommended by the vet, some grain-free stuff (which he then recommended we DON'T do), etc. But we can usually get her to eat once a day, but it's a chore.

Yesterday she was pukey, had to rush her outside a couple of times. Apparently last night she had an accident in the house, which she NEVER does anymore. I mean never. She wakes us in the middle of the night very insistently if she needs to go out.

Then this morning she didn't come into our room looking for morning attention like she usually does (this is a ritual) when she heard us stirring, also didn't eat her treat last night or this morning, which she ALWAYS loves (Pupperoni and Minties).

Then when she went on a walk she shat what looked like mostly blood.

Acting fairly normally except a little puny at times. Vet says she ate some wet food (we never do this) and we may have to keep her on that for a few days, he is going to put her on metronidazole (like what we use in humans for a lot of intestinal infections like Giardia, etc.). We can pick her up at 4, but will need to bring her in next week for some bloodwork.

See, we THINK she might have eaten a mushroom that was in the yard, but that was a few days ago, she didn't have any problems until yesterday. But apparently it can cause kidney and liver issues, and these can take 10 days to 2 weeks to show up in bloodwork. So we're not sure that has anything to do with it, but dogs can also do this with just general STRESS as well, and we have all be cooped up in the house together on quarantine for 10 days now. So, yeah, she may be a little stressed as well. Major change in routine.

I think she'll be ok, but my son is pretty worried about her - they are inseparable. So we will see.

<edit> To add to the stress, this will cost us a few hundreds more when I'm having to not work this 2 weeks, and forego not just this paycheck, but maybe also the next one as well. <sigh> Always something...

Good luck. It seems that pet problems always occur at the worst times. We has a scare with the first family dog less than a year after we got her. It turned out to be a corn allergy. That was over a decade ago and she's still with us. We've been fortunate that we haven't encountered anything that our vet was unable to address.

That really sucks. I feel for all of you, and wish you the best. Our 'boss' has been around for ten years, and I don't know what we'd do without her. I mean, she is as much family as the wife and I and both our kids. We've had a couple of scares with her over the last year, and just knew we were gonna' lose her. It all worked out for us. I certainly hope it does for you as well. Keep us posted.

Here, but occasionally There.
Don't know about the mushrooms. We had a MinPin that could smell those things before they even broke the surface of the ground and would dig them up. I don't remember him ever reacting to them, but maybe I just don't remember. I do know that when we saw him digging, we would stop him. He never dug unless it was for a mushroom.

Haven't heard anything else bad from the vet yet, so they're gonna go pick her up in a little bit. Hell, I might go with 'em. Just to get out... only place I've been in 10 days is to the bank yesterday to deposit a check at the ATM.

Oh man ... I feel ya. They become part of the family in a heartbeat. I know you think you're a tough ol' bastard but it's obvious she's got you wrapped around her paw!! ;) Glad she's doing better.

Nero has a rumbly gut, too. When nothing else works Gerber baby food -- lamb or chicken can get him off high center. I give him one jar that has been thinned a little with chicken stock just to entice him and then another jar mixed with cooked Minute Rice. That routine morning and evening will at least keep him drinking water until his tummy troubles pass. Might give it a try. I know it doesn't sound like much for a 100 pound GSD but it's enough to calm his stomach and get him to eating again. Haven't been to the vet for his stomach issues yet (which come and go -- I "think" the little **** is sneaking "treats" of chicken poo ... Now talk to me about EARS if you wanna see a damned vet bill ... Sigh ...

Hope all turns out well. Our labs pay no attention to them other than hike a leg sometimes. We had some 10" across about half the summer is seems like.

She's back, seems no worse for the wear.

And yes, @THAT Gurl, you're right, she has become an integral part of the family. I will admit a soft spot for her. Animals are still animals, and my cats can go jump in a creek (in a burlap sack!) for all I care, but Jayde is my baby, now. <sigh> I've become 'one of those' people, apparently. lol

Hope she gets better.

I ended up making the food for our dogs after so many had issues and finding out how little nutrition most dry dog food has. 1 lb cheap hamburger, 1 cup brown rice and 1 can of green beans. You also have to feed extra vitamins but it works well. We have only had 1 dog that had issues with it.
