In 2003 mom and dad were without permanent power at the farm over 30 days. I was without over 1 week and lost all our food in the fridge and freezer. I said to myself, self, ainna gonna happen agin. Called Faith Electric and took advantage of their finance program. We paid it off 5 years early. It has been on now for over 11 hours straight. No filling it with gas, no manual switching and we are warm and toasty watching TV not worrying about food in the fridge. We are an island with power and our neighbors are dark. We have also invested in a fraidy hole, a new roof and now all new windows and doors before Christmas.
Wife has gotten me to buy ammo whenever we can and is thinking about getting another gun for herself. Whaddawoman!
I did same thing with a $500 colaman genset and wired into the breaker. Sure I had to feed it 11 gal of fuel in 24 hours but pfft. It ran 7 days straight back in 2007 and a few other times for a day or 2 and was well worth the money.

Nothing like having a generator to power the house. I almost felt bad a few years ago when all houses on the block were dark but we had the Christmas lights on [emoji23]
Yeah I feel kinda bad too. Except we ate a lot of bologna and beans to afford this. We offered once to our neighbors to share the fraidy hole with us. They brought their 50 pound wet Labrador that was freshly, humph, freshly? sprayed by a skunk. They all went into the hole, I stayed out of it to make room for THEIR dog. Last time that's gonna happen.

If roads are better tomorrow and I'm off work, I'll bring it.
I am teleworking and today the state closed state services for non essentials ( I hate being considered that lol) but this is the first time that has happened and I have no idea if I will be off again tomorrow. All depend on the VPN connection working or not.

I really appreciate the offer, Clay. But, I think the tree will be okay; it’s been growing 10 plus years and should make it without a problem. If you can get a day off tomorrow - do something you enjoy!

I really dont mind getting out if its not too dangerous to drive.
Let me know, overnight may bring more ice. Id hate for you to lose a tree 10 years old.

I’m having a house built. We have to have a tree in the yard per code/HOA. I’m trying to figure out which maple or oak turns that maroon color this time of year. Maybe both do. Can the tree experts help out here?

Look at a Chinese Pistachio, Maples are shallow root trees, Oaks are great strong and thrive just about anywhere and are very common, the chinese pistachio is something different and the ones I have seen all have bright red fall foliage and appear to do very well here in oklahoma.

They absolutely do! i used it to heat my 1800' shop I used to have. It was 14' walls too and that think kept it at 45* at night so water pipes wouldnt freeze and when I went to the shop in the morning, 20 minutes with it on and I was hangin my jacket up.
I use it to preheat my 30X40 shop so the central heat unit can keep up.
Wood burner double barrel stove in there as well to back up the propane heat. Spend a lot of time in the shop reloading and working on stuff to stay busy.

A fine needled pine would be my choice.

Same. Pine needle tea is pretty tasty stuff. We had power last night. Neighbors all up and down the east side of the street did not. Quite a while back when we were without power for several days it was the opposite -- they had power and we didn't.

Still have baby quail in the house. Their tub is in front of the fireplace insert and sitting on top of a heating pad. They are kinda bunched up, which concerns me, but they are making 5 tons of racket and eating and drinking so that's good.

Crimson King is a guaranteed maroon. We have two Silver maples and both are pretty deep red but it's a crap shoot on the color as they could have very well been orange, yellow or bright red. Not as slow growing as an oak but it's taken them almost 15y to really start getting pretty in the fall. They've been thru 3 major ice events and seen 90mph+ winds a dozen times at least and still look near perfect.
