I'm good at acquiring guns, but can't shoot worth a dang.

I take this one very personally. I apparently love to buy and shoot guns, but I'm just not that great with them. I think it's mostly because when I go to the range, it's for fun and stress relief. If I'm there "trying to get better" then it is just another chore and no longer seems fun to me.

I have an odd ability to be able to do most things that I put my mind to, but I can't do any of them really well.

Except lasagna. I make a GREAT lasagna. Just ask anyone that is going to be at my house for dinner on Christmas. I make it every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Once I got old enough to voice my distaste for turkey or ham, my tradition started.

The other thing that I think I'm really good at is AutoCAD. Been using it for almost 30 years now and it's my bread and butter. What I'm not good at is transitioning to Revit which is the way the industry is going. Which sucks because I'm not old enough (or rich enough) to be planning for retirement anytime soon.

As for "kitchen talents," I can't even fry water...

...I mentioned that once on an RV forum and one of the ladies told me that one doesn't "fry" water, one "broils" it. I waited a couple of weeks and got back on the forum and stated, "That doesn't work either. I can't get the water to "brown on top.""

While I'm NOT (repeat - NOT) a technical photographer, I really love doing photography. I just spend my time composing the photo rather than worry about camera settings. Thanks to a great wife, I've been able to acquire some excellent cameras and lenses.

The photo below was taken using a Nikkor 200-500mm lens at the 45th Infantry Museum on NE 36th. This photo was taken at 500mm from the parking lot with the plane a fair bit off. I posted it on a forum once, and one of the guys that is a "pixel peeper" asked for the full original photo file to look at. What he saw on the forum appeared to have aberrations when looking closely at the details of the plane. I sent him the full size file and he responded that in that full file, there was absolutely NO aberrations. (This lens was originally purchased for wildlife photography, but I haven't been able to do much of that.)

Same airplane, but with a setting of 50mm with a different lens.

One of the few wildlife photos I've taken with the 200-500mm. Not sure of the settings, but he really wasn't that far from me when I took this one.

Thank you. I grew up "at the knee" of a self-taught artist. My mother painted for many years and later taught others to do the same, mostly in oil paints. I guess I "acquired" my ability to compose a photo by seeing what she painted and what she used as a study for creating the paintings. I even got to the point of critiquing some of her newer paintings, looking for errors, which probably helped me as well in my learning process. I remember pointing out to her that while she had snow on the base of a tree trunk, there was no corresponding reflection in the water in front of the tree. It never took her long to correct any errors that I found.

My wife and I took a photography class together many, many years ago. The teacher would give us an assignment of what pictures to take, or how to take them. We would take the pictures to class next week and he would critique them.

One week, he goes down the row, student to student looking at pictures. He looks through my wife's pictures.... "Um hm, um hum, good. Okay, good!"

He looks at my pictures next... "Um hm. Um hum. Um hum." He hands them back.

"Okay, in your family? SHE holds the camera." :pokeowned:pms2::lmfao:
