My 17 year old son is wanting to become an airline pilot. Those of you who are pilots, in all of your wisdom, what school would you advise? He's not wanting to go armed forces at this time. Researching online leads to a wide variety of sometimes contradictory answers. Thanks!

It's far easier to gain a pilots license privately through a school than it is through the military. Might not go as far in the field, but every air force recruit is competing for that honor. There's technical schools out there that can get him started and accredited, but it's a very,, very expensive education to become a commercial pilot.

At American Airlines seniority ruled. New pilots started with American Eagle flying commuter planes at low pay. When they advanced to American the trips were bid and the newbies got ones with many take offs/landings and lousy layover cities. Took along time to get to Senior Captain and pick intercontinental or international flights with only one take off and landing. Big money then but need to love flying to get there. Good luck to your son.

Long story short a close friend of mine is a pilot for Delta and was the Chief Pilot for Pinnacle airlines for some time. He's trained a lot of guys and he's my age. I can put you in touch with him, he geeks out about this stuff. He always says going military is the way though LOL, even though he didn't.

To be perfectly honest, he will not get in the airlines in this generation if he has no Military experience. There are currently close to half of commercial (ATP's) furloughed right now.
In college at Stillwater, 5 of us went through the program 20+ years ago. I was the only one who didn't go military after college and I'm the only one not flying for a profession. We're all early 40's and they don't like it- missing half of everything your kids do, etc. Flying day rates for corporate can make you $400-$800/day depending on equipment, but forget having time off and kiss goodbye to your ability to say "No". You might get a few hours notice that you'll be gone for a week. Flying is really fun and really addictive. Makes owning and shooting guns seem really inexpensive.
