There are laws that govern those who engage in the business of manufacturing ammo....near as I can tell, it doesn't apply to someone who sells some reloads in a private transaction or two. Now, if you start cranking out rounds on your press and selling them regularly, you might run into trouble.

i was wondering about this yesterday. I’ve been trying to get things together to start reloading. Let’s say I’m making it happen, and I start loading up some 30-06 occasionally for my buddy so that he doesn’t have to source/pay retail for factory ammo. This would be considered ok?

That all depends on how your friendly local ATF folks define engaging in business I guess. If you are regularly selling reloads to someone, that could be construed to be business I suppose.

I was once given some 44mag reloads by an individual. The very first one i shot caused me to throw the rest away. What happened you ask? A piece of lead splintered off and stuck in my knuckle. I'm glad I don't own firearms anymore. :)

This is where words are important.

It states (....for the purpose of livelihood AND profit....).

So; if one sells only occasionally, albeit for a profit, it doesn't meet the livelihood portion of the "And" phrase.

IOW, if one is not making ones livelihood from it, ATF states it is not illegal.

Having other income could very well come into play here.

That applies to commercial reloading, not some reloads you don’t need anymore.
Just
Like you don’t need a Ffl to sell grandpas gun at a gunshow
Edit- what dump stick said.

I think a prosecutor would read the line:

No, if the person reloads ONLY for personal use.

Tread lightly...

It's a gray area, and I can assure you that I'm not the person to test the boundaries in federal court.

I have never sold, or even given away, any of my reloads. Anymore I don't even allow my reloads to be fired in someone else's firearm.
