I am thinking about getting into squirrel hunting but would not want it to result in babies being left alone in the nest to starve. Is there a particular part of squirrel season that will make that less likely to happen if a female squirrel is taken? Call me sentimental but babies are babies and I've rescued several orphaned baby squirrels in my life.

Squirrel seasons should cover that.

I grew up in Texas, but Dad made us strictly observe the seasons for that very reason.

He loved fried squirrel.

Yes the season dates protect against this however, I did shoot a pregnant one once. Felt bad gutting that and finding 5 fetuses inside. Thats the only time it ever happend and dad and I hunted squirrel many years when I was younger. I loved eating them but hated skinning them. I'd rather take a butt woopin than skin a squirrel.

I don't have much input on this as I don't know, but man I am excited for squirrel season. April 15th cant come soon enough.

EDIT: May 15th. Dang, I've been telling myself April for a month now. Talk about torture.
If it were April 15th, you would orphan some babies.
They usually birth early April I believe or late March

You can set up in my backyard. 2 years ago I found a hole in the 2nd floor wall next to a window. Little b*****s chewed a hole in T111 and made a nest. I waited till they were gone, over 3 months, mid May, then set out the trap.
I figured 4-6 total. Set a trap and caught one per day....for eleven days! Finally the wife said no more, the dog was driving her nuts with the squirrels in the cage til I got home.
And no, I didn't kill them. Took em down the the river and turned them loose. Figured the hawks needed some practice.
Guessing I have the same amount now as then (too many). Little suckers everywhere. I here them drop and run across the roof every morning. Fun to watch, damage cleanup, not so much.

I dream of hunting squirrels in my back yard one day.

Come over, set a trap, u can take them home, start your own colony. Heck, I'll catch them and call ya. If you're not too far I'll deliver. I cant tell u how much i cant stand them. I loose to much paint on the house every year due to them crawling around.
I've thought about getting a recurve and having practice. Problem is they run the tops of the fence and too many windows in range not to mention woof woof.
