Yeah, this isn't a giant concern for me.

Nor is it for most of the world.

A different perspective:

"The best way to insure that your plastic straw ends up in a sea turtle’s nose it to recycle it.

Regular trash goes straight to your nearest landfill. Absolutely zero chance of the straw getting to the ocean.

But if you recycle it, it could be shipped overseas where it is manually sorted for recycling. Unfortunately dirty plastic won’t be used so it gets dumped in the nearest river or body of water. Cue the sea turtles.

So feel free to use plastic straws but don’t fall for the recycling scam."

Also,

"A huge study of plastic waste in the oceans had previously determined that 90% of it came NOT from western nations at all, but from a number of river systems in Asia and Africa, coming out of nations that do not have robust trash collection and recycling infrastructures like found in western nations.

The “culprit” was never the plastic straw. It was under developed societies."

But, recycling, locally, is currently an even bigger scam.

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa area’s primary recycling center is expected to be shut down for another 6-8 months as repairs continue after a fire at a Tulsa recycling center earlier this month.

The center has been closed since the fire the night of April 1 that firefighters say was likely caused by an improperly disposed of battery.

“The control room that operates everything was burned, and the structural steel in the roof was twisted when the fire got too hot,” says M.e.t. Executive Director Bobby Shultz.

“Curbside recycling is just not the same in the Tulsa area right now. If you leave it on the curb, it will be burned or go to a landfill..”

Shultz is asking people to drop their recyclables off themselves at one of the M.e.t. three locations as they can still collect a wide range of items.

Here are the Tulsa M.e.t. locations:

  • East Tulsa: 2160 S Garnett Rd
  • Downtown Tulsa: 1101 S Cincinnati Ave
  • Central Tulsa: 3495 S Sheridan Rd
But people are still segregating trash into the authorized blue containers.

Actually, landfills are designed so that nothing decomposes, nothing breaks down. It's all compacted, so no air can get in. Any decomposition going on is anaerobic, which will be incomplete at best.

One could dig up a landfill after 50 years and still read the newspaper.

There has been a great deal of talk about 'mining' landfills for different materials; metals and so forth.
