Buy your own land. Problem solved. Other then family I’m not dragging anyone else along.

Those extra hands are great until they turn on you. Family members only. And a couple of those I’d keep a close eye on.

Family is the first bunch I'd cross OFF my list. I'd rather bug out with a number of the people here than be cursed dragging anyone outside my wife and son that is a member of my family. I'll eat a bullet first.

Reading Matt Backen's book series right now and more and more of what I read looks more and more like what I see. <sigh>

Step 1, trust no one. There, problem solved lol.

This reminds me of something my grandfather who grew up deep in SE OK. "If you ever decide to break the law, do it alone. That is the only way a secret can be kept. If you absolutely cannot stand it and HAVE to tell someone, tell your dog. Then promptly walk him out back and shoot him. That is the ONLY way to keep a secret." Haha. My wife was raised in a much more innocent family and that little anecdote really threw her for a loop the first time she heard it. I decided I like my dog, so I just don't do things that require that level of secrecy.

i know some are serious and some are just joking. but in reality----how many acres does it take to sustain a family, person inthis situation.

It depends on your plan. Id say for true sustainability, you could get by on as little as 10 acres if you are raising your own beef. Half that if you are ok with just chicken and some pork. That is plenty of room to grow your own veggies, have a couple of wells, and some room to maintain a lineage of meat producing 4 legged critters. If you are wanting to live off wild game, you will need a fair amount more to be able to pursue the game without getting into someone else's land.

The plus side to 5 acres is that monitoring borders would be simpler and is plenty close to tie in security and be able to watch everything from your living room with buried cat6 cable. The downside is how little breathing room there is before someone is on your doorstep so to speak.

Sadly I'd be up to participate, but I gots no land and few skills that would be of any use in that situation. I'll probably be in the 'first wave' or at least the 2nd that buys the proverbial farm.

No ****. You and I must have the same relatives. Sheesh. It's pretty damn sad when you hear that one of your relatives has passed away and the only thing you feel is relief.

We got a good tight family. It takes work but you get out of it what you put into it.

I envy you then. I've always wondered what it was like to have family that didn't think you were just someone to use and abuse. Til Grumpy I was a pretty standoffish *****. Now I'll at least smile for ya before I draw and quarter you. :hey3:

Maybe in your case, and I'm glad for ya. Having family members willing to do their part and appreciate something someone does for them is a good thing - I guess, not like I would know. Guaranteed not in my case... don't matter how much you do for some people, you ain't gonna change their underlying personality.

<edit> And trust me, it ain't from me wanting people to bow and scrape or thank me profusely or whatever - I just want people not to be dumbarsses and not to be mooches. Once I see those tendencies coming out, I got nuthin' for ya.

I'm pretty sure medical skills would be in high demand. Not initially, but it would be obvious pretty soon.
