No matter what you do, if you have to rely on TPD, based on my experience you're screwed. Keep your valuables in a safe and have good insurance coverage.

We use Simplisafe, they have some nice equipment nowadays. Works well for us.
Yep, As long as there is no life safety issue the last thing TPD appears to want is showing up while the burglars are still in the home. The mentality seems that the insurance company will make the homeowner whole again so why bother.
Yes a good safe BOLTED DOWN and out of sight is a massive advantage. Avoid putting the thing in your closet if you can
An alarm does still have its up side (even if not monitored by a central service) Its nice to know that when you come home someone is not hiding in your home somewhere. If someone does break in hopefully they wont feel like they are good to stay there for an extended period of time and feel an urgency to leave.
I have a friend who in HS had their house robbed. Big house. They were in there most of the morning going thru and flipping the entire house. Found a spare set of keys to his mustang in the garage and loaded up the car before they took it. The spare keys should of been in a safe and an alarm would of hopefully limited the time they were in the home.
About a year or two ago. Neighbor across the street had a job where she would be gone for weeks at a time. People broke in and spent many nights sleeping in her bed. Drank all of her large wine collection. had her kitchen knives hidden all over the house to use as weapons in the case she came home. An alarm and a deadbolt on her wine closet would of really helped. She is lucky I saw something was up and went over there. She could of come home late one evening and been in real trouble
We had Simplisafe in two different homes in Oregon. I foolishly went with a name brand company for my system when I moved here. Cost me a pretty penny for the equipment and i am locked into a 3 year agreement at $55 a month. In the next year I will be able to cancel and will be going straight back to Simplisafe and paying $29 per month with no contract.
Tulsa does charge an annual fee to have them respond (or not) to emergency calls. Fortunately we have never needed TPD so I cannot say.
For outdoor cameras and security I would recommend Ring.
Like I said above, we will be going back to SS as soon as it is finacially reasonable. I will be ripping out the crappy gear I was sold, and having some fun at the range with my 12g and AR15...

I have really liked our Vivint smart home setup so far. Outdoor cameras have logic to detect people and are IR for total darkness. We have them setup to trigger an alert if a person is detected after the alarm is set. Our biggest deal was the number of windows and doors we needed sensors on. The garage doors all have tilt sensors and auto close when the alarm is armed and upstairs windows are monitored as well. My favorite part is the ability to disarm remotely and unlock the front door if a family member needs in the house while we aren't there. They also allow us to hear what is going on around any of the cameras as well as speak through them.
The kids weren't quite as excited about our thoroughness because we have a speaker in the master bedroom notifying us if the alarm is disabled or triggered in case they have plans of sneaking out at night. There really isnt anywhere to sneak to out here though, it would be at least a half mile to get to the next house that wasnt a family member, haha.
That said, Vivint is limited on the number of cameras it can support, so I am shopping for an auxiliary setup that is monitored by us. The cool stuff there are the smart cameras allow you to set focal points so a camera pointed up our private road will alert anytime a vehicle or person is seen traveling down the road.

+1 on the alarm. We have had SS as well now for 6 years or so. Works as planned. The alarm monitoring is provided by a third party however. Additionally on the upside for a alarm, some insurance companies provide home owner insurance discounts if you have a fire alarm as well. Although I've seen instances where the TFD won't go into a burning residential structure without permission regardless. FWIW I have a note on the SS monitoring side that there is a small poodle dog inside the home. Hopefully they won't let it perish, but I know it has happened.
When shopping for SimpliSafe, check out the refurbished models. That is what we bought and never a challenge in the two homes it was installed in.
