I had a number of errands to run earlier today, and started paying attention to the folks I saw. I saw people of all races, ages, physical condition, etc. doing very respectful things virtually everywhere I went. I saw a young black guy holding the door for an elderly white woman. I saw a Hispanic boy, looked to be about 13-15 years old, stop and pick up an item a lady dropped in a grocery store. People everywhere were holding doors for each other, and speaking to each other. I only encountered one clerk that didn't thank me for my purchase.

I know there is a pretty good sized group of disrespectful, ungrateful, low moral folks running around, but today's experience felt really good, and encouraged me to try to look for the good folks instead of the opposite.

Attitude and outlook are vital....gratitude and tolerance will see you though a lot.

I was listening to NPR on the car radio this morning and heard an interview with a very unhappy person in England....blaming prejudice for making him and others miserable....he went so far as to give speeches in which he asked audience members to recall the first time they encountered prejudice and how unfair society is... etc. I could only partially agree. Yes there are prejudiced people but people of every color encounter jerks. The key element is how you react. If you buy into a ready-made narrative that society is against you then you are doomed to a downward spiral....better to shake it off, look for the good in others and avoid the jerks as best you can.

I saw my share of good in people Saturday. I volunteer at the Northeast Resource Center and we did a community free wash day on NE 23rd Street Saturday. I saw many volunteers white, black, male, female, young and not so young cheerfully helping strangers with free laundry services, a sack lunch, free books for kids and hygiene kits for men, women and children. Made for a very special Saturday morning. Reminded me with all of the hate we constantly hear about there is much good in people without any publicity.

It's the Oklahoma way. I see people of all sorts doing nice things for others. There's this young black guy works at the Aldi in Yukon. As he was ringing me out, he was just as pleasant as could be, I asked him if he was from Oklahoma...Nope, a transplant from Chicago! He said his sister lives here and convinced him to get the hell outta there before he got shot! He said he'd never encountered so many nice people before and it was sort of hard to get used to it.

I've lived here in Oklahoma for 9 years now after moving from Texas to be near the rest of my family. I don't recall ever meeting someone that I thought was rude and nearly all the people that I've spent time with have treated me like family. Oklahoma is a great place to live.
