You are correct, flashing bright light or the appearance of a curtain in your vision, an arc are all signs of a retinal tear and a true emergency. The Ophthalmologist stops whatever he or she is doing on all patients and will take care of this patient.
I've had a floater for years, but it didn't bother me. I had cataract surgery on both eyes last year. As I was laying there waiting for the surgery on my second eye, I discovered I had a second floater which I had never noticed before! Still got 'em, but they really don't bother me at all. Most of the time, I don't even notice them. My distance vision is much better now (without any glasses) than before the surgery. However, my near vision is not nearly as good as before. That is the one thing that disappointed me.
Could you explain what you mean by flashing bright lights ?
Here's how I experienced it: A bright yellow band of light on the edge of my field of vision. It happened when I looked at a bright light or "scanned" (turned head) past one.
Best wishes on the upcoming surgery, I bet it will be worth every penny. I had the custom prk, Lasik or whatever they called it at TLC about 15-17 years ago, was pretty expensive but worth it.
I've had floaters since I was at least 18, don't really bother me I am accustomed to it now. However duck/goose hunting floaters piss me off with a clear sky backdrop. Think, catch one floater glimpse and oh ya birds coming in, nope floater.

My mother had both eyes done this winter with no problems. She was amazed at well her sight improved. Only regret she had was not getting them done sooner,.

Gah!! In the last day or two I've noticed a floater in my right eye! It looks like a spider hanging from a thread in front of my eye and moves when I make any eye movement. Guess I'll have to call my eye doctor. I've also noticed that flashing a few times over the weekend. Getting old sucks--until you consider the alternative!
