One of my neighbors up here on Grand bought a brand new SeaDoo a few years ago. He was so excited to get it on the water and ride it that he didn't check to see if the drain plug was in. It wasn't. It was in the bag with other accessories in the water proof compartment.
Within a few minutes of being on it, it sank. We had to pull it out with my boat. He had to have the motor rebuilt and it never really ran good after that. He finally sold it for parts and now has a new one. It was an expensive lesson. lol

We keep a carabiner on the key ring with the ignition key/plug. Makes for a good reminder when you jump in on the boat ramp to start prepping for launch. We also keep a spare in the glovebox just in case.

Been there with the very first boat my dad bought. Nice big inboard Bayliner. I was in 6th or 7th grade. Everyone was excited and in a hurry to get it in the water. 30 minutes later we were back at the ramp and boat was completely swamped. The padded motor cover was about 6” under. Best 2 days of a boat owners life are when you buy it and when you sell it.

I've had to jump into freezing water once as the plug has a tether to save the boat after beaching it to keep it from sinking. They won't actually sink, as most of the newer models have flotation built in to keep them afloat but they will be darned close.
I'm anal now about pulling up off the ramp, pulling the plug, standing there until any water drains and putting it back in at that time.
