I've been wanting one for a long time, but after some research I decided I want the Camp Chef version rather than the Blackstone.

Someday...

Seems to me the Camp Chef is better built. I haven't been left impressed with the Blackstone after playing with them multiple times for several years at WalMart - knobs feel cheap and loose even new in the store, can't imagine how bad they'll be in a few months or a year. The cabinets/carts seem wobbly and overall I think they seem pretty lightweight and flimsy, with the exception of the cooktop itself. I've read some reviews on a BBQ site I frequent where these discussions come up frequently (the Blackstone is very popular there) and it sounds like the Camp Chef is overall better built - though it IS more expensive.

I want to find a place I can play with the Camp Chef before I drop cash on it, though from what I've read, they occ go on sale about as cheap as the Blackstone.

Ya do realize that floor/display units are often subjected to about the worst possible torture tests known to man (and children)... no tellin' how many 40-60 pounders have swung on those. :D

Yup... but I've played with multiple different models many times. Some I'm sure have been used and abused, some may have been more or less new, I don't know. I just know I wasn't impressed with the build quality of any of them, really. Some of the "higher end" models of this lineup had more solid-feeling actual knobs, in terms of feeling heavier or having better rubbery grip or whatever, but the underlying mechanism didn't feel solid to me. To me, it feels like they're chroming them and trying to make them flashy and look good, but not improving or solidifying the mechanism.

<edit> Like I said, I've been eyeballing these for at least 3 or 4 years...

Atwoods carries Camp Chef. I came close to buying one the other day. The one on the floor appeared to drain the grease through a hole in front left corner and I couldn't understand how you caught it. Need to study a bit more. They had another brand too, but I can't remember what it was.

I will tell you, don't do like I did and forget to clean the griddle surface for a few months and then remember an hour before you are supposed to start using it again. Man, every bit of my seasoning on the left half scraped off with the lightest swipe of my scraper. Nothing against the griddle itself, that was ALL ME there. Another bit of a tip, don't start drinking those wobbly pops until AFTER you have cleaned up the griddle, lest you forget all about that poor thing out there. :-)
