Yep remember it well, same day as my FIL's funeral and we were all watching footage on TV. Also remember than some nut in some kind of uniform appeared out of nowhere and assumed IC of the S&R.....he had no qualifications whatsoever, just wanted to give it a try and everyone bought into it. A few hours in some officials started discussing that nobody knew him or heard of him and finally figured out his shenanigans lol.

I had forgotten that bit about the impostor incident commander. Thanks for the reminder!

Was this guy named William Clark? He was busted five years later for calling the Russian embassy and claiming to be part of a covert operation to assassinate Putin, and he wanted to warn him. He has issues.

I remember when the I-40 Arkansas River bridge collapsed. I know that was because of a barge hit, but if I remember correctly, the state did a full, ‘across-the-state’ check of the bridges. They rebuilt tons of bridges, not just the major traveled ones, but even dirt road, creek bridges. Maybe the whole country needs to do that.
I actually knew someone who died in that bridge collapse. That was a shock to learn, and I have to admit that it still crosses my mind when I cross the new one.

It wasn't just that one that spurred the politicrits into action, though. Even being able to see freaking daylight through the crosstown expressway in downtown OKC couldn't do it. People had to die from chunks of overpasses falling through their windshields at highway speeds to get them into gear.

I can’t even imagine the terror those folks went through in the seconds before meeting their maker, too terrifying to think about.
I vaguely knew a couple as well, on their way back from Arkansas after burying the lady’s father of all times. They stuck in my mind because they had a farm, tons of land, and mostly all new farm equipment, a very well off family/life. Now keep in mind this is the story I was told by their son’s cousin/best friend, so overall from the concencess I’ve heard over the years, the basis of the story is true, since it’s secondhand, some of the details could be skewed. Anyway they had 1 boy who was 2 years out of HS, they left him everything. The boy went Jack bat crazy, drinking, drugs, exotic vacations, he could only see dollar signs, had nearly all the cash gone, and had started to sell off equipment, inside of 2 years. His uncle finally got ahold of him, got him in rehab, turned him around. Last I heard, about 6 months back or so, he settled down, married, a child, and he’s finally got the farm back to turning a profit. The profit only happened, because they had 2 big oil wells nearby and he started get royalties. I wish I could just have the cash he blew!

Man, I wish I had the cash that I blew when I was young and dumb. It's like I was living in an Asleep at the Wheel song:
Made so much money I could have bought Nebraska
Spent half of it on whiskey
The other half on women
The other half, well, I just threw away

OK, I didn't spend that much on whiskey, but I had the other two down pat.
