I had heard that if the gun owner is present while the work is being done and had not left the gun until that time, then it was ok. I can't say for sure .

If you making a living as a gunsmith even if the work is slow limited or Al most nonexistent you have to have one of the many FFLs to be legal. If you work on a friends gun you can also get into trouble if the feds push the issue. Oddly there appears to be some loopholes. One actually is part of the rules. If the work is begun and finished in the same calendar day it can be argued that your not a gunsmith. The possible loophole is the law that allows us Okies to sell guns privately to each other. Possible example. If a good fixit guy buys your gun for a reasonable price and makes some changes to it and you see it and like it so much you just ha emo buy it back. If this could be done is suspect it shouldn't be the normal way to do business.

Just get the FFL and make it legal.

I didn't mention a washer... I was talking about locking a thin nut (or the threaded spacer he has) against the threaded part of the can to prevent the barrel from bottoming out on the first baffle.
:drunk2:
Washers, nuts, nothing is to be used on a threaded barrel with a can. Your correct, my bad. You didn't mention a washer, You did mention using a hacksaw on a thicker nut to make a thinner one.
Strictly verbotten when using a can.

Any suggestions for a good gunsmith in the OKC area? I need the tang on a Marlin 1895CB tapped for a vernier sight. I’ve heard too many horror stories about poor work to roll the dice. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I just used Cutting Edge Arms to have my pistol milled for a sight, with good results. Got it back to me in three days. For a not so good result I give you Dissident Arms (in Texas). I had a "tactical tuning" done on my shotgun and was promised 2-4 weeks. I first contacted them at three weeks just to see how it was going, which started an 8 week game of phone tag and promises to call me back with a timetable, then multiple time tables that were broken, finally with the owner refusing to talk to me. I ended up having to threaten to call in the gun as stolen to get them to finish it and send it back. That being said it runs fine, but never again will I trust them with one of my firearms.

I don't know of any at all. Not one. There are some CAS gunsmiths in TX that are reputable and a friend of mine has vouched for one, so I'd take something to him, but that's just about it.

I heard once that there used to be a real gunsmith in OK, but IDK anything about that.

Good afternoon, I was scrolling looking for a gunsmith and wondered what your experience was with the guy that was recommended.

Steve Baldwin is the best around IMHO. I've had him do several jobs and have always been pleased. I took one project back to him to iron out a few 'kinks' and he took care of it while I waited.
