Howdy man...hope you're doing okay. Also hope you have your answer figured out too.

FWIW, I have a 17HMR too and love it for what it is.

Regarding a get home gun: I don't think it a bad idea to play out in your head next time you're welding all the obstacles that might be between you and home. Stuff like other vehicles with armed combatants, rioters, looters, mobs etc...

None of those play well Into the wheelhouse of a rimfire...especially multiple attackers or anything behind a barrier harder/thicker than plywood.

One of my urban combat schools (this one happened to be the Basic Urban Skills Trainer) offered us the ability to see a video test on how well common military rounds penetrated barriers. You might be surprised on how much better a 7.62x39 did than a 5.56 on things like brick and concrete at an angle.

Anyways, I could blab about this subject for hours, but in short, I'd highly recommend something that can 1) Fully penetrate a vehicle broadside [not including engine], and 2) possess the ability to quickly, if not immediately incapacitate on a less than perfect hit. Pumping multiple rounds of .22LR into everyone can get old in a hurry.

*Ha! I found that old video! Worth a watch to everyone. You never know what's going to be found on YouTube.*

If this happens it will be 90 percent cross country and would take about 15 hours to get home I understand what your saying but I was thinking if I had to eat along the way squirrel or other small game there would be nothing left to eat and the rifle and ammo would be lighter to carry I’m no spring chicken anymore

Unfortunately man, you and 10 million people between you are going to have the same idea.

Back when the Allies invaded Germany, the mass exodus of German citizens fleeing border cities/towns created a swath 8 miles on either side of the autobahns. Vehicles that broke down or ran out of fuel were just left, and the occupants just started foraging off of farms/land/houses close by. 8 miles was about as far as they would venture off the highway in unfamiliar territory.

I hate to say it, but I would bet that you will be 200x more likely to run into armed people with bad intentions than you will squirrels.

Experts say society is 9 meals away from total anarchy. People whose kids haven't eaten in three days will do some pretty crazy stuff to get them food/water. Unfortunately this is why plans to trek back home on foot are far less likely to succeed than the preparers hope.

Best bet is to ensure that you have the fuel to never stop.

If you really want a gun, something like a shorter rifle in 5.56 or 7.62x39 is probably going to be your best bet. A good padded sling and vest will help a lot too.

Wasn't trying to insult your intelligence man. I just was yanked out of my element from 2012 - 2015 and forced to handle government continuity plans for every kind of scenario possible. Sometimes when I see people 'war game' a SHTF scenario I jump in because it was a part of my life for a while.

Anyways, if I had to carry a .22 as well, I'd do a conversion bolt and red dot on a QD mount with extra rimfire magazine. I'd be able to go back and forth with minimal zero loss while only carrying an extra pound or so in addition to my AR.
