My late uncle was like some of you. He did not want a cell phone either. When I asked him why his response was to the effect that 'every time you see someone driving down the road, they have one of GD things stuck in their effing ear'. He also claimed that he couldn't hear on them, yet my hearing was a lot worse than his and I head in them all right.

I have them for emergencies and carry an iPhone with me. It is how I adjust my hearing devices. An app was installed that enables the iPhone to do this.

However, I don't let it rule my life. I control it; it doesn't control me.

My grandfather was practically deaf. He literally would be holding his hand up behind his ear to hear us better. My father-in-law was one of those people (few as they are) that was very soft spoken. (My normal voice volume would be a shout coming from him.) We observed the two of them in conversation once, and Grandpa didn't have to cup his hand behind his ear to hear my F-I-L. I guess it was because of a difference in frequencies in the voices. F-I-L had a lower voice than I do.

Instead of adding to the spam on phone thread I will put this here.

I was talking with my neighbor yesterday and I told him why I feel everyone needs a cell phone.

It is because of what @Snattlerake posted in his rant.
I really think it is all related to our education system failing us not teaching the individual to think critically and the morals of the person not being followed that causes this behavior.

That is his quote.

Years ago you went to work got your work orders and went onto the job and got it done.
Many people today can't seem to get the jobs done. No critical thinking and many need to be baby sat.

Morals of people are in the gutter so you feel your children need the phone for protection.

I still hate cell phones and remain in the group that does not have one.
I have one for the sole purpose, that it’s easier to mess with than a sit down computer, plus it’s better than a CD player while I’m in the reloading room, that’s it. Course OT is easier to text someone, so they can respond at their leisure. I keep it on silent, so it might be 3-4 hours, or more before I know someone has called or texted. Makes the wife mad as a hornet, so that’s pretty fun too.

when my current one craps out I'm going back to a flip phone like my brother has.
No texts, no messenger, no crap Just takes pictures and phone calls. Removes a lot of stress he says.

Not sure you can even run these on some networks anymore? I know AT&T and several others are dropping support for 3G, I don't know if old style non-smartphones are even going to be supported anymore.

Honestly there was a time when I thought I would never have a cell phone. Now that I do I love it.

I take my number with me no matter where I move to.

Convenience, if I need to make a call I can, send a text , email etc. Heck I even signed loan papers from my bank on mine.

I can look up anything I need to and for work thats a plus.

Safety, emergency phone call is always handy to make or receive.

Yep, have a buddy with a 3g flip and ATT is forcing him to buy a new phone. Not sure what he is getting just said they gave him a super deal. I do know they make at least one 4g flip, have another friend that has one.

My parents recently received a new flip phone from ATT to replace their old 3G only version. It basically looked the same as the old one, so they're still out there.

I finally replaced our land-line with a cell phone last December, because it was cheaper than the phone bill and dialup internet charges.

However, if it hadn't been for the included hotspot capability (for a computer), I wouldn't have been interested in a smartphone at all. It cost $60.42 a month (which was about the price of the phone itself).

We also bought a "pay as you go" ATT plan years ago for Sweetie, but she only turned it on when away from the house (actually still have it).
