I was wondering what kind, if any, deer supplement you fellas are putting out. After seeing the couple if threads with those nice looking bucks, it got me to wondering

Typically I start feeding just corn about now and add some Big & J. One of my buddies said he’d been feeding Big Tine and I’ve seen some of the deer he has on camera.

Let me know what ya’ll are feeding and what you might add.

I feed corn all year and generally fill my protein feeders sometime in mid August. I try to find the cheapest “all stock” or dairy feed for my protein feeders, and I have a timer on them and try to make it work out to where I only feed a ton a month. When I used to feed free choice, the deer would eat a ton in about 10 days, and that was more than my bank account could stand.:angry3:

I’ve always just fed corn starting in mid-September. Corn is high in carbohydrates and when deer digest it, it actually increases their body temperature, so they tend to lay off of it in the hotter summer months. Not saying they don’t eat it, but their feeding doesn’t usually pick up considerably until it cools down a little.

I am feeding Double Down protein this year and have been very impressed with the results I’m getting. It is my intention to establish more clover / perennial food plots, then go with a winter wheat mix for winter food plots. I’d like to get less reliant on feeders and create a better year round habitat and food choices for deer and turkey.

Protein feed is expensive and as mentioned previously, they go through it fast when free feeding. The bucks hitting my main 600 lb feeder cleaned it out in just 3 weeks this time. Thus the push to get more free, or cheaper sources of protein through food plots.

With that much feed, you'd be better off with some stocker calves!
