It is strange indeed that so many Black politicians are anti-gun.

I was stationed off and on in North Carolina for 14.5 years of my career.

The state had a law requiring either 1) a concealed weapons permit, or 2) a pistol purchase permit to buy a handgun.

The pistol purchase permit was a 1919 Jim Crow law that required the County Sheriff to sign off on an authorization to allow you to buy a handgun. Obviously it was created to prevent black Americans from buying pistols.

The part that aggravated me even more, was that as a military member you had to also 1) have a letter from your commanding officer that stated you were of sound character, and 2) had to have an additional background check at the base Provost Marshall's Office. Then you had to get a local background check done at the County Courthouse ($15). After all that, you had to take the letter, the base background check, the local background check and $5 per permit (max of five permits issued) to the Sheriff's office and file them after filling out more paperwork. To make matters worse, the Sheriff had five working days to respond...and it always took five days ...all they did was sign it.

Yet you could go buy an AR with your driver's license, and be in and out in 20 minutes.

I know they did away with the base authorization/check in the late 20-teens. I think they may have finally done away with the pistol purchase permit Jim Crow laws too. How that law survived so many years is beyond me.

In reality it still is. Poor black people in urban areas are by far the most impacted by gun control and the inability to defend themselves.
