Gas Hot Water heater blew a couple of day ago and thank God my wife was home. Tank was leaking even with the water turned off and could not drain because of the silt and crap that had accumulated at the bottom. To the people that are going to say, "you should flush it every year" screw that. I get 10 years out of my heaters and that's fine and I'm just not going to do it. Couldn't drain with hose even with taking the tap top off and running wire through. Wife caught me because I was planning to try and move it myself. Tight squeeze that required removing the door frame and removing fresh air intake (I do that because of a CO thing a few years ago that almost killed the wife). Still, count up the weight of 40 gal of water and a gas tank and no room to edged it out. Also don't forget a wife that watches me like a hawk. Got ahold of a great plumber that was local Matt Grant (use him because he's good and he's honest). He did the work yesterday and I wish I had done this 10 years ago but it is what it is. Because our water hasn't been turned off at the meter since Davy Crocket, the city meter was spewing water like a water park. It was after 5 so I had to call the water dept and the guy on duty worked his butt off for about 3 hours fixing the leak. I told him that since it was the meter, my water bill will be calculated on the bill of 3 months ago as will the next one if up. They will of course. That man I've known since he was a boy and he is a real working man now. Our city water employees are outstanding. I'm not sure who is going to replace them when they retire. I think this younger generation won't go for that kind of had work (and it was extremely hard...we have hard pan soil). He stayed with it till it was done any I'm so happy. I needed a 110 electric line for the exciter so I called a local electrician and low and behold, one of his employees is the son of one of my best friends. His name is Cooey Potts (yes that's what we call him and always will). He's journeyman electrician and DARN GOOD at it. Also, another honest person. I ran a short extension to run the wh for now. I could do the work because it's just tapping into a plug in a bedroom plug almost directly across from where the plug is. I could do it myself but I want him. He's a new father and will have a great career as we can't find an electrician because they are so busy. Since it's him, I'm going to have him do a couple of other things like putting in a subpanel, upgrading my breaker box and removing an unneeded 220 line that I should have never put in and a waste of amp/breaker space.
I'm blessed for some reason. I was able to get a great plumber to come off a job and do ours as well as an electrician that, by luck only, could come by and set me for work next week. This just don't happen but thank you Lord.
I love this tankless gas heater. Here's a pic as well as the old one I have to figure out what to do with. Back when I was a kid, I'd grab these in a hot minute and cut them in half (tank) and make hog trough's out of them. We used them for our hogs (and I still love hogs. We raised them because we needed the food but they're darn cool animals that have gotten a bad rep) and sell the rest. Not anymore. So I've got to haul it off today.
How about this..... Used water heater for sale for 1 grand or free if you pick it up. Might work.

Last time I replaced my water heater, I made a raised platform to go over my high lift floor jack. Disconnected the lines to the old heater, pushed the raised jack into the closet, and slid the old water heater (pan and all) onto the platform. Installation was the reverse --- just slid the new heater (already in the pan) from the jack onto the water heater stand. Easy peazy! Well, kinda easy peazy...........

Also, using a floor jack helps immensely when changing out a sink garbage disposer --- the jack holds the weight of the disposer while you do the fastening and hooking up the lines.

Happy projecting, y'all!!

I'm really glad you didn't try to handle any of that yourself, Al. The last time our water heater was replaced, our plumber was a very good personal friend. Whenever I needed any work done, I would just leave one door unlocked and he would come and go as he pleased, then lock up when he was done. I didn't know until many months later that he wound up with a hernia replacing that tank all by himself. Had to have surgery and was down for quite a while. Take care of yourself!

Take care of yourself Steelfingers and remember the olden rule. If they will not let me do it, you should not either. :P :P :P

Yea the wife and docs had a fit the last time I wanted to do something like that. I am still trying to feel good enough to paint the kitchen ceiling, if the paint is still good.

Bright side, even though they would not let me install the new living room floor, I sold enough stuff they are coming Friday to install it. :thumbup3:

If its not one thing, it's another.
Ha. Wife said bad things come in three and she's starting to scare me. 1. Water heater did an imitation of flooding in Tennessee. 2. City water meter decided I needed a fountain in my front yard (my side of the meter. 3. Didn't have a 110 to hook up to the new tankless heater.
I always think God would be a great scales man at a cotton Gin. Everything that went through a Gin was bubble on the bubble. No give and no take. So, I. Found a great plumber on the phone driving 90mph to get home that could come right over. I got a great deal on good quality tankless gas wh (I've always wanted one) and they could put it in the next day and did. 2. Perhaps the hardest person on the planet was working at the Water Dept when I call about the meter. Most would have just turned off the water and had a crew to my house the next day but probably Monday. This guy never missed a beat in that horrid heat and worked well past dark till he got it fixed. 3. We can never get an electrician but made a call and he had a young man that was one of my best friends son who I watched grow up. He could send him over and did so he was going to tie into an existing line and put in a plug. I figured I'd make it a good call so I'm going to have him un hook a useless 220 that I had to put in when I remodeled one of the bathrooms and put in a combo heat/light/vent. Not sure why I though I needed a heater.....old dog thing I guess, but I can use those two breakers it takes up for other things.
So.....maybe my wife is right and bad things come in 3's. Maybe I'm right too and God is a great scales man

I feel your pain. Mine is halfway up above the linen closet (about 6 feet off floor). 40 gallon. I'd have to be5 in the attic to flush it out! It went out about 10 years back, and the old one was gypped up. I bet that thing weighed in at 300 lbs! My son was a big a**ed linebacker/ weight lifter in high school then. It like to killed us both getting it down even using a swivel pulley with a rope brake I made. About halfway down, my wooden rope brake broke and he yelled "Move Dad! I lost my grip". Lol, so he throws all 255 pounds against it like a football practice dummy and wedges it against the door frame, and we finally hog wrestled it to the floor.
New one going up was like a feather pillow compared to that. Anyway we danced the old one through the kitchen where 1 leg broke off it, and out the back door. It fell off to one side and it laid there for about 2 months before I chained it and dragged it to the alley and talked the city into picking it up.
The "new" one rumbled the other day and made me look up. I'm 66 now and just hoping it holds out as long as I do! Then it will be somebody else's problem!
