I guess it depends on what you have dogs for. If they are only companions, it would feel very different knowing they had dispatched an intruder. Our dogs now are a mix of protection for my kids and companion. If, heaven forbid, a situation ever comes up where our kids are threatened while I am not home and they dont leave the perp DRT or off the property with minimal direct threat to the kids, I will have to find them another home or have them put down and replace them with dogs that will. Same goes for property protection, which I dont really own dogs for unless it is inside the house. If I have a tool for a specific purpose and it doesnt perform the task when needed, I have the wrong tool. Companion dogs are very different than the tool mentality and I am a huge animal person, but just like our Anatolians that kept coyotes off our spring calves there is a job to do and that job comes first.

I had 3 Rotties when I was young, and was typically home alone until the sun went down from the age of 5 until adult. Both parents worked, though dad was stationed at the Fire Dept about 2 miles away for most of my childhood. We had a 12 gauge and a phone in the well house with a steel door, but the Rotties were primary protection. My parents had to get me inside to spank me or my dogs would display protective tendencies though not flat out aggressive.

Some details I read about Ok statutes on canines was they must be on leash, under owners control unless enclosed in yard, pen ,cage, structure. Otherwise if they attack, injure, bite any human, they can be declared vicious. Resulting in owners being fined and/or possibly dog being euthanised.

So therefore when I said on our property I should have said on our property inside the fence. I'm sorry I thought since we were talking about dogs the fence part was implied

Dogs are NOT human, nor do they have human values.

I'll just leave it at that...

No, they aren't. But I am human and I do have human values. I can assure you, I value my dogs more than I value someone who would hurt them.

And I'll just leave it at that...

If you spend everyday with a dog, their ability to communicate and understand goes through the roof. Dogs are not human of course but they sure seem to get a lot of things. Mine killed a bird and then looked at me. He didn’t like it. Now a bird can land near by and he just looks. Same with rabbits. He can catch them but chooses not to. He’ll lay in the grass while they hop around. An hour before I leave the house I can tell him “no you’re not going” and he won’t even get out of bed. He also doesn’t want me to pet him because he’s irritated about being left. There’s so much to them but it takes time and focus to bring it out.

Exactly... They understand and process more than most people give them credit for. Mine are the same way. We communicate with one another just as well as if they could talk for most day to day things. It just kills me when they're sick and can't tell me what's wrong.

I really love my dogs. Always have.

I have always said that the people who call dogs "dumb animals" do so because they are not as smart as the dogs who "work" them.

I feel the same way about cats. Those guys got it going on! Haha!

People, in general, are ****ing idiots. 🙄🙄🙄
