I'm 57. Born 1964. Final year of the Boomer generation.

Have you noticed people are not nearly as well-dressed, well-mannered and well-spoken as they used to be? I remember the times when beards were the exception and not the rule. I remember when only bikers and sailors wore tattoos. I remember ladies and gentlemen. I remember when "Mr." and "Mrs." were common. America needs a good old-fashioned spanking. England and other nations have followed this slum-look fashion too.

I'm the same age as you. I may be one of the only sailors that doesn't have a tattoo. I had a uncle that was a retired Master Chief. I seem to remember him telling me not to get a tattoo. I guess I never had any desire to have one. Or any body piercings. But I do have a beard most of the time.

Beards are one of those things teenage boys in the 1990's started as goatees. Then beards got bushier progressively. It seems as beards is one fashion which younger men influenced older men to take up. The high price of those truly-good shaving cartridges that don't actually dice your face up like the cheapies may have seriously deterred male facial shaving this century. I use a Norelco electric everyday. Facial hair feels gross. I tried mustaches in the 1990's and said the hell with it not long afterward. Clean-shaven is sanitary and fresh. I won't pay $5 per Gillette Fusion or Schick cartridge that won't dice up my face.

I too made it through 4 years of the Navy without getting inked even visiting some of the sleazyist ports in the Mediterranean ripe with parlors. I'll never forget a fellow fireroom snipe "Harrellson" from North Carolina who'd get drunk and a new tattoo in every port. He'd wake up the next day and start crying, saying "oh Moma's gonna kill me when she sees this one..."
I grew a beard when Zumwalt granted facial hair and civilian clothes on the ship (1970). After that just a few times I grew out a beard then removed; I've maintained a moustache for about 10 years now.
There is no dress code other than business casual or no "tank tops" or "wife beaters" allowed. Proper grammar and pronunciation has declined to the point I once received a resume done in text message language. At a young age I was enamored by the communication skills of William F. Buckley, watching him on the TV show "Firing Line". Like Rush said, 'people judge you by how you speak". I consider myself not too smart but have had a successful career by being able to communicate effectively.

I don't think younger men influenced me into growing a beard, LoL. I sure don't wear a man bun either. I'm not going to be guilty of getting those big freaking holes in my ear lobes either. So I can pretty much say younger people are not influencing me.

There was a guy I new in class "A" school that would get a tattoo every pay day and it was cartoon characters. They were just random here and there on his arms. We're talking blue dumbo, porky pig type tattoo's.

We had a lifer first class that had so many tattoos we called him "cartoon". He had a dragon on his entire back and propellers on each ass cheek with the text of "40 knots and no smoke"...it's a Navy lifer-thing indicating operational efficiency and bravado...

I blame "Duck Dynasty" for the ugly beard fad. The popularity of growing out ridiculous looking beards seemed to correspond directly with the popularity of that show. It's a crying shame that fad didn't die with it, as so may guys still run around thinking that the longer and rattier looking beard, the more of a "man" you are. I like a meme I saw once concerning this fad: "Your beard doesn't make you a man; vaginas can grow hair".

Born in 58. I dress impeccably for work -- people judge you by first impressions and in my line of work it is important to convey an attention to detail. I like to think I'm well-spoken and polite -- at work, anyway. At home ... Well, **** this, **** that, **** everything isn't uncommon ... Lol

I have a thing for men with that 2 day I didn't feel like shaving stubble. I dunno why but I find it incredibly sexy.

I was a biker ***** (with no ink) before I met and married a State Trooper. Now I have one arm completely sleeved, ink om my chest and shoulder of that same arm, a backpiece and my other arm has ink on my lower arm from the back of my hand to my elbow.

I still say sir and ma'am. I am polite to people who are polite to me.

I have at least a half dozen co-workers (several different ethnic groups and younger than me) who are the same way. Fairly well-educated, polite, well-spoken, dress and present themselves nicely and have WAY more ink than me. They all say sir and ma'am and address guests with Mr. and Mrs.

I'm just as bad as the next old person to lament the passing of "our ways" but each generation has it's time come and go. Our time is moving aside for the next set of "kids" to move up into their own. Things may be different but there are still plenty of young men and women who "represent" well. Sometimes we focus too much on what we don't like (beards, man buns and wearing PJs in public, for example) and not enough on what is really important (volunteerism, and caring for the less fortunate, for example).

You're absolutely right; I remember my folks struggling with the "60's flower power hippies and the music. Sometimes it's just difficult to pass the baton to the new generation. I'm thankful that I raised my son to be respectful and a conservative. Like Granny said "it'll all come out in the wash"...

I had never even seen duck dynasty until a month or so ago and I don't think I have watched an entire episode. Typically winter time is the only time I have a beard and that is because it helps keep my face warmer while out in the cold. It's not something that I feel like a have to have year round. It doesn't stay on in the summer long enough to get to duck dynasty length.
