How does "Public Land" work?

If you go to New Mexico, their “school land” is technically public and you can hunt it even if a landowner has the land leased from the state. Since some school land in NM is landlocked with private property surrounding it the rancher can’t legally lock a gate if their is a road that leads to that school land. Unfortunately that’s not the case in Oklahoma.

this was the case probably 10 years ago at least. Things could have changed.

as for the public land up here in the Panhandle, yeah basically you can explore and hike. I just don’t ever do it during hunting season cause I don’t want to be a *********. As for hunting, plenty of deer. Birds aren’t the best to hunt for on public here.

First its public land, so it belongs to everyone, be prepared to meet a few special folks who feel that a specific spot is theres for whatever BS reasons

Most folks are there for the same reason you are, they are friendly and willing to exchange info on what they have seen.

You might walk up on someone, they might walk up on you, it happens, just excuse yourself and back track out, unless you are on a trail then walk on thru. Thats what trails are for.

If someone wanted to be jerk abut it they could walk right up next to you or in front of you and sit down, it is public land, but I seriously doubt anyone would be that stupid.

I met some great folks fishing this year on public land, hunting might be different tho.
