M1A is not optic friendly. (yes, I know there are options, but it is not, and cheek weld becomes an issue even with a good mount)

Still, it's a proven, reliable, son of the M1 Garand. Too much weight for soldiers of today to hump, but just the right size for a regular man.

M1A all day long...

It will sound crazy but I am asking for a guy I know. He had not heard of an ar10 until I advised him about them this past Friday. I think his budget is around $1300. I'm not sure if that includes optic or not. I'm pretty sure his budget limits him from a higher quality AR.
What is his motivation for a .308 rifle?

Hunting, vs plinking, vs historical collecting, vs home defense/working tool would result in different answers.

The M1A is an option if the beholder is looking for nostalgia.

The large frame ARs are otherwise superior in many ways.

.308 is a bit much for an inside the house HD gun unless you live by yourself out in the country with no neighbors.

^ However it is significantly superior to small frame cartridges when it comes to barrier penetration and resulting terminal performance (eg. stopping a vehicle coming at you).

Both great choices ... I do like my M1A Scout.

I have had a scope on mine in a Bassett mount ... shot great but I ended up taking it off and going to a 2X Aimpoint. Had that for a few months and went to EOTech. I will never again be shooting this rifle past 200 yards so the EOTech sight works geat for my shooting.

Comment was made about the cheek weld is true with any scope or sight. Remedy is Bradley's excellent cheek rest. Rock solid product.

I’m not sure if you are familiar with them. Palmetto State Armory also known as PSA make some good AR15s and AR10s which they call PA10. You can buy complete rifles, complete uppers, complete lowers and all the other parts you desire. Right now you can get a complete one for about 1100. A little cheaper if you buy an upper and lower. They run specials and I’ve seen lately where you could buy an upper and lower and get it for around 800. Tons of different options and modifications. They are good quality. You might have your friend look into them if that’s something that interests him. They also have a lifetime warranty on them and their customer service is really good.
