Which Direction to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring

We installed some planking in our RV and the planks lie parallel with the length of the RV, and they also pick up the light from the large rear window. When we had planking installed in our son's home, they laid the planking in the living room the same direction as the planking in the hallway. It also happened to be "towards" the patio door and its light. One may also want to consider laying the tile in the direction of the longest side of a room.

We tore out all of the carpet (except in the master bedroom) of our lake house a couple of years ago. We kept the boards running the same way and used as few transitions pieces as possible.
Like others have said. Just take your time and have fun with it. It’s super easy.

Make sure the floor is flat and perfectly clean. Lay the plank in the direction of the longest wall.

In the link they mention going the same direction as the longest wall. In my experience that has been the best way to decide.

Once you get it, you will love it. We had carpet replaced with wood planks before we moved in our new house. Only bedrooms have carpet. No regrets after years, still love the planks. Easy to clean floor.

One of my nieces had trouble with her lungs when she was young, so one of the first things my brother would do when he'd move into a new house was rip out all the carpet and replace it with wood flooring and tile or vinyl plank flooring. It helped immensely with my niece's problems.

My sister-in-law is not exactly a neat freak, but she does keep a clean house, so the living room/dining room areas get swept after every meal and steam mopped at least once per day, and the vinyl planking has held up well so far (I think they've been out there for five or so years).

A floor that is flat enough for carpet may not do for vinyl plank. Floor must be dead level, with no dips, edge to edge and corner to corner. Some leveling concrete followed by some precision sanding may be required if floor is only a carpet grade pour.

I used the light commercial thickness plank vs. the thinner home grade. Not usually found at the big box stores.

Good points. What do you use to check your floor? Being able to identify what’s high and low is important. Mainly you want to avoid a big leveling pour when you could have brought a small area down a bit.

A laser is probably easiest. Lots of YouTube videos on how to do it. I do leveling this way. The stick really helps.

The crew I hired to lay my plank used a laser level, to good effect. Just a note that there are low dust and high dust methods to sand the leveling concrete; the less dust the better. Efforts to keep the dust localized and off surfaces/adjacent rooms, as well as out of your HVAC system will be rewarded.

Just got two boxes of planks today. Enough to do my front door entry way and then some. I will see how the project goes to see if I want to continue. There is currently some 1970’s vibe tile I gotta knock out before I can start laying down the vinyl. Wish me luck. And I hope my foundation is level. Don’t really want to do a lot of leveling.
