I had a revolver stolen years ago; it was eventually seized by the Garvin County Sheriff's office, from a felon.

After the trial (and conviction) I went to Pauls Valley to retrieve it.

The Undersheriff told me flat out that he would not release the firearm, even after I showed proof of ownership (never get rid of receipts, ever).

A quick trip upstairs to the DA's office, a phone call from the ADA to the Undersheriff, I went back downstairs and fetched my revolver.

The aforementioned Undersheriff didn't say a word as he handed it to me, but he was certainly unhappy.

The prick.

Had a family member get a pistol stolen. It ended up all the way in Dallas and actually got used in a murder. Family member finally got the pistol back, then not long after they called for it back to use it in the trial against the guy that they caught for the murder. Being a good citizen they sent it back. It was I think two years AFTER the trial that they finally got the pistol back a second time.

Friend of mine came home after work one day and found his door ajar. He kept a 12 ga loaded and leaning inside the closet door. Blankets from the bed had been laid out on the living room floor with his ham gear, computer, stereo etc...

Got his shotgun and a character (illegal Mexican) crossed the living room in front of him. The thief went into the garage and my friend followed him. The guy was trying to skinny under the door (open for the cat) and couldn't get out. Thief stood up pulling a knife from his pocket and threatening my friend. Guy got a 12ga blast to his left shoulder from about 7 ft.

My friend called the cops and said "better send an ambulance and some squad cars..." Cops said "why?" My friend said "cause I just shot a guy in my garage".

They came, said it's the guy they've been looking for as he's been doing a bunch of b and e's in the area. Of course they took the shotty.

Next morn the cop called and told my friend that the hospital had to amputate the guys arm and shoulder and that as soon as he was up for travel they were shipping him back to Mexico. 6 weeks later they told him to come and pick up his gun.

Don't you just love a happy ending?
