I flat out won't own a 300 blackout while I have a 5.56. I've seen multiple shooters lose guns to having 300 rounds accidentally mixed in with 5.56. The thought of it terrifies me. I have an AK if I want something with more punch at shorter ranges.
supposed to read the primer end before you stick it in you gun at least i thought

Or the entire cartridge since they look nothing alike.

I'm not an AR guy... so this may be a dumb question.

Given the difference in bullet size, a .300 BO shouldn't even come close to chambering in a 5.56/.223, so how does it ruin the gun?

300BO is a shorter case, the parent case of the 300BO is the 556 case but resized to 30 caliber and shortened. Which will allow the round to chamber in a 556 chamber and fire, but your not going to send that .308 bullet down a .223 barrel. Something is gonna give usually the upper reciever and bolt right in front of your face.

I understand the premise, but look at the pic of the two rounds a few posts back.

If you draw a horizontal line from the .223 neck to the .300 BO, they are NOT the same size. The .300 BO is a larger diameter at that point.

Have any of y'all actually seen this happen?

The 300BO will chamber in a 556 but 556 will not allow the bolt to close on the 300BO. I had read about this before I built mine and made a inert 300BO round (for safety) and i inserted the 300BO round in my 556 it will chamber and fire.
