Our great leader is recommending us to get an emergency radio; the one thing I think that has come out of this administration that may actually be a good idea.

Any recommendations?

I would go down to the store in Warr Acres. JB's Analog

Now you’ve done it - another place for me to spend $$$$ on radio gear. Fortunately, my next visit to OKC will be the week after the Green Country Hamfest in Claremore. Any spare funds will be gone.

A budget would help as well as if this is just going to be stored for emergency situations or do you plan to use it as a hobbyist.
Thanks for the question. At first I was thinking this would be used for a shtf situation, but it would be a good idea for me to at least be a hobbyist to learn how to use it appropriately. I’m open on the budget side, from an entry level hobbyist standpoint. I’m not sure what kind of dollars are involved.

I am pleased with my Eton Elite 750. It's a good performer. It's portable battery powered as well as with an AC adapter. It has an internal telescopic antenna and inputs for two types of external antennas. A 50 ohm and a high impedance for a random long wire. You can study up on these if you go this way. It's nearly as sensitive as my more expensive radios. Amazon has them at $400 right now. It does shortwave, am, fm, aircraft, and a couple other less useful bands. It receives single side band which most hams use making it more useful in shtf situation. If you got $1200 to spend, I have a whole different way to suggest you go.

While listening might be of an advantage in a SHTF situation and entertaining inbetween, being able to talk back might be more useful and entertaining. I would suggest you think about doing a little studying to get your ham radio license. It is a great hobby for individuals and families alike. With doing that you will be very knowledgeable of equipment available, antennas, frequencies, and the overall aspect of radio communications to be able to not only listen but participate in what is going on locally and world wide.

Yes as Poke78 stated, April 8-9 will be the Green Country Hamfest at the Claremore Expo Center, you can find detailed info on line. This will be the biggest ham radio swap meet in this area. $10 at the door with all kinds of new and used equipment, ham radio, short wave receivers, computer equipment, anything electronic, etc. for sale and a test bench to check everything out before you buy it. Free door prize give aways with hourly drawings and some neat radio grand prizes at the end you do not have to be present to win with.

If you decide to attend, come by the Mayes County Ameture Radio Club (MCARC) tables and say hello and introduce yourself. I am Ken, the guy with the cigar. We are raffling off a Blackstone Griddle at 1PM Saturday also as a fundraiser. You are welcome to PM me if you would like also.
