So I’m shopping around for a flat bottom boat. Considering 12-16fy, slapping a small<10hp outboard or long tail on it and a trolling motor. My dream is to have something I could go do some fishing in, set some jugs, or use to get to remote areas via the river. Often all three the same day. Just an all around hunting/fishing/adventure boat.

when looking at these boats I’m finding that most have a capacity of 400-500lbs. This just doesn’t seem like a lot. If I have 150lbs worth of motor, fuel, safety equipment, and batteries, how am I supposed to fit anything else? I weigh 230, the dog weighs 90, fishing gear is about 30, cooler and ice is another 50. That’s over 500lbs and I haven’t even added a fishing buddy. What’s the deal? Do I just need a bigger boat? It’s my understanding that abiding by weight limits and horsepower ratings are not only essential for safety, but it’s also the law.

The questions is: How many guns are you wanting to take out at once before you have that "accident"

Don't know of any 12' flat bottom boats that you could put 10 hp motor on. Also 10 hp will have to be registered with state and have a tag. That's why a lot of manufacturers have 9.9 hp motors. Also I have had the smaller flat bottom john boats...never again, I'm not that agile any more. I have a 12' semi v bottom that I like and it's only rated for 7.5 hp.

I’m shootings for a sub 10 horse motor due to tagging and cost. Outboards seem to get really expensive, really quick. I don’t need to go flying across texoma at 40mph, just enough to go piddling around and catch a few fish, maybe get to a remote hunting spot.

I like small motors for this reason too. Cheap to fix, easy to remove from the boat, use very little gas.

I had a 12', gets crowded quick, scary when the wind gets up and water gets rough. Moved up to 14', world of difference.
Sold both. Wouldn't consider anything under 15', now.

I had a buddy tell me the difference in the wind between a 14’ and a 16’ boat is a lot.

I’m to scared of this water stuff you guys talk about though.. I think it should stay where it’s at, 100’-300’ below ground.
