It's been awhile since we had BBQ out as opposed to firing up the grill at home but mama has got a craving for BBQ tonight.

We tried Ray's once when he first opened and maybe things have improved but I seem to recall that that the food was pretty good but the portion size vs the $$$ spent made it not such of a good deal.

Vann's is / was also pretty good and we've eaten there a few times but we like a little 'tug' to our ribs and with their ribs you could almost grab the bone and give it a firm shake and the meat would darn near fall off the bone.

Tried Rudy's once just off of Hwy 9 a few years back and we didn't care for it at all.

Ate at Billy Simm's a few times and we must have thought it was decent because we ate there more than once.

Never have tried Dickey's.

Not looking for a road trip so in Norman would it be.........Ray's, Vann's, Dickey's or Billy Simm's ?

Dickey's is where I go now, they closed Rib Crib several months back. I like Rays but it's expensive and you get more for your money at Dickey's than anywhere in Norman.

I don't do Billy Sims except for a quick sammich if I'm hungry to death, it's not that good and is extra salty. Dickey's is usually aight for a chain; I've not been disappointed, but Rudy's is always good...at least in Tejas. I have not been to a Rudy's here, so I can't say but I will have to go try one in OK now that you say it's not any good. In fact, I will go to the one off 9.

I agree with your assessment of Rays...not disappointed but not impressed either. meh

Haven't been to Vann's but based on your description, I won't go. I don't like ribs that fall apart.

So that leaves Dickey's...go to Dickeys.

Chickasha has an aight place by Atwood's - Jake's Rib. It's good to stop by if you're in town but I wouldn't make a trip for it.

There are a lot of mediocre BBQ places in OK and not a lot of outstanding ones. I've been to numerous forgettable BBQ places in OKC on somebody's recommendation and Yelp, so much so that I don't even try to find BBQ in OKC any longer (same with Steak houses). If I run into one, I just keep it to myself now. In fact, every good pit I've been to is closed so I usually wait for a road trip to hit Hard Eight (the original in Stephenville). I will drive to Stephenville just to get 15 lbs O'stuff for the fam.

We have one good place here, but we don't get any sides...they're store bought and bleh. The meat is outstanding though - some of the best burnt ends around, but it's gone in a couple hours and they're only open two days of the week. I'm waiting for Meers to start their pit again, but I think that is forever gone.

The few times I've ate at Rudy's the brisket and turkey was loaded with black pepper and I just can't stand all that, made it to hot for me. There sides are excellent though. Love those potatoes covered in butter.
