Well I went to hamfest Saturday morning bright and early. Talk about being in a place and seeing so much stuff I had no idea what 99% of the electronics were for. At least it was neat seeing a lot of ancient technology that will likely be useful and maybe the only way to communicate over distance in the future.
I was at the Tulsa Amateur Radio Club table right by the front entry. I would have been glad to answer any questions or just talk radio with you. I wish we could have connected today.

Well I walked by you several times. Nope did not have my OSA shirt on, had a MCARC shirt on. (never know who is around you, right?) When I lived in Tulsa I was a member of TARC for over 10 years. My first tech plus ticked was signed by OSM at the Catoosa testing location in 1987. Little Abenors first Saturday of the month if I remember correctly. What a batch of people remember that place?. Greasy smash burgers and fries. Yep, come back for more later. Then to the airport at NWS to watch the old WW2 radar during storms, still got a log from there.

Yep, hamfest coming back was great. Don't think as much traffic as the old ones, but good. I used to drive golf carts for RCWA years ago when we kept them running the whole show. While on "duty", any one walking out, particularly with something they purchased, was offered a ride. Then I swept the parking lot for anyone who might like a ride in as I was going in for more. Met a lot of interesting people from many places and many states.

It might be interesting if we OSAers that are hams could connect some way to know who is who in ham radio also. Yep, throwing out our call sign reveals all of our personal identity to everyone, but we seems could make it a floating PM some way if we wanted to send our call sign to only connect with known call signs of others that have a license or something like that for interested individuals to build a contact list. Whatcha think?

Me, I am pretty open, I am the guy who most always has a cigar hanging out at the MCARC or sometimes RCWA tables. I have been known in the past sitting in my house with my .45 I holstered that morning for opening up the door and being the firestarter for the 11PM "Knights of the Roundtable" that went on nightly for over 3 years when I could stay up that late. If you do not like bacon, you were not part of us. You ever been to a RCWA "Burger Burn" I have retired, but I might have cooked your burger in years past. Ha ha

Hamfest is kinda a convolution. Churches who can decide carry is OK all the time, but if used for voting is restricted from carry during that voting time. How about a municipal building where carry is prohibited that is leased out to a private organization for an event that their Organizers do not restrict carry for that time? Does that become void? Humm

I used to know some of the local Claremore PD that knew I always carried from other functions that were legal, but I did not see any of them I recognized present after the time laps.

If interested in a Ham sub group from OSA, we could just meet on the air and chew the fat about shooting. I have total access and control of 147.06 + 88.5 or 444.675 if we might want to set up a "2A firearms ragchew net" for the Tulsa area at a particular day and time for 2A enthusiast. OSA members and others who might want to join us. We just have to get together and decide a time slot.

PM me with your opinions if interested.

Passed my Technician, I'll do the General next month when they test again.

Congratulations. Way back in the '90's, I tested for Technician Plus after being encouraged by a gentleman that had a General license and worked for me in a "major national electronics store." However, I had the additional advantage that I had to work with Morse code when I was in the Army, so when I went to take the code part of the test, I heard one of the guys ask another if I was doing OK with the code. The answer he got was, "Yeah, this guy isn't having any problems."

However, I never really got into the hobby much. I had a 2-meter and a 10 meter rig, but really never used either of them very much. My license expired without being renewed.

Mainly getting into it to do with my father, he has been involved since before I was born. I'd like to share the hobby with him while I still can. I will say I'm glad they don't require code anymore, I tried to learn it once in Junior High and gave up in frustration.

I’ve made a couple of attempts at learning code but gave up. I’ve still got the Begali paddle key. I cheat now by using Ham Radio Deluxe Software when wanting to use code. But, I primarily use HRD for the logbook and the digital modes (PSK31, etc.).

Edit: forgot to say “congratulations“.

Odd thing about code is that not everyone can "send" code, no matter how well they can receive it. When I was stationed in Pakistan, they assigned us a couple of guys that didn't need nor take code in their training, so my trick chief and I were tasked with teaching them. My trick chief wanted to be the teacher because it was a break from the regular work. After a couple of weeks, he came to me and asked me to "give it a try because the two guys just couldn't learn it."

I sat down with the guys and started sending, and they went right to taking the code and getting it mostly right. Come to find out, my trick chief was "ham-fisted" and couldn't send code in a "regular" manner, so the guys couldn't really determine what letter or number he was sending. Prior to taking the Technician Plus test, I did use a code software for practice. After all, almost 30 years of no usage of code left me a bit rusty.

Are you any relation to Royden Freeland by chance?
