I didn't wanna hijack the other thread, so I figured I would just start up a new one.

My family and I were talking about April 19th and 09-11 tonight, and we started talking about our first news worthy story we could remember as kids.

Mine was the day Elvis died. My mother and her best friend were both HUGE fans. I can remember them both crying continuously as if they had just lost their parents or a sibling.

My youngest daughter remembered 9-11, even though she was only 4 years old.

My oldest daughter said the one that stood out in her mind was...

...wait for it...

Bill Clinton receiving oral sex from Monica Lewinsky in the white house.

Off the top of my head........

I recall Reagan being shot. Remember that it was all over the news and they kept playing the footage over and over.
Same year, I think, MTV went live.
A few years later, I remember sitting in a jr. high home ec classroom and watching the Challenge shuttle blow up on live TV.

I remember desert storm, I was 5-6. My grandma told me my uncle Richard might have to go be a cook in the army. I remember Waco, I remember ruby ridge. I remember the OKC bombing clearly, as I had mentioned in the other thread. I vaguely remember the third or fourth anniversary of the challenger explosion.

I think the first major news story I remember was the 1st Mercury launch. Schools were let out so kids could watch the short flight on TV.
We couldn't afford a TV but the neighbors had one so that's were we watched it.
The suborbital flight only lasted 15 minutes or so, but everyone was cheering when it came back and landed safely.

I could still take you to where I was when I heard about Elvis and, later, the Space Shuttle. I liked Elvis, but his death didn't mean that much to me, and my mom surely didn't cry over it, but we both knew someone who was affected by it (in Mom's case, the neighbor lady; in mine, a kid at school who styled himself after the King). I was sitting in the Driver's Ed classroom when the principal came on the PA system to announce that the Challenger had blown up on takeoff.

I remember the moon landing back in 68 or 69

The 60's for me were my growing up years. The years that really made an impact are 68 and 69 as far as girls, cars, movies, music, girls, school, girls, historical events, did I mention girls?

Historical events that changed my life? Not really. It is just a long big blur.

9-11 changed the attitude of the major companies my company did business with. You could definitely tell the difference before and after. Before 9-11, security at any company, any government agency, any hospital, was always the redheaded stepchild getting table scraps from other divisions in their corporate structure. After 9-11, they were throwing money at security. The security companies were far from ready for this and were slapping in systems that were obsolete when we installed them and readily showed their weaknesses. Within a few years the security companies rallied and state-of-the-art technologies finally surfaced and became affordable. I remember working on towers and high up on sides of buildings on a pan, tilt, zoom, control box replacing a 110 volt relay. Within a few years, the PTZ mechanism was in the camera itself.

So in a way, 9-11 was the rebirth of the security, fire, life safety industry.
