I've been carrying the Ruger Super Redhawk in 7.5" barrel for several years in bear country with a chest rig and a speed loader on the rig. That thing is so heavy I'm looking at a 10mm semi auto to wear on the hip with some heavy for caliber solids for penetration.
Decided on the S&W Series 2 as I'm a fan of the 1911 and they have the same grip angle as well as competing with one in .40 in USPSA matches for around 5 years. Very familiar with the platform and controls, so that's the direction I'm going unless someone has a recommendation other than a glock they are happy with. Own one glock won at a DU banquet. Never own another.

The 10mm is good. Probably good enough for what you are wanting it for but it is not the equal of the 44 Mag. Not even close.
But hey, if you want to unload that Redhawk let me know. Been wanting one of those for a while.

Personally, I like the 1911 idea, but if you want to go Glock, I would look seriously at a G29.
No glock ever in my safe that I would have to buy. Just don't like the grip angle and the trigger guard. When breaking in the G-43 I won at the DU banquet, I had a blister on my finger from the poor design rubbing on it.

Know that. I keep 300 grain Underwood solids in it when in bear country which are more than adequate but that danged thing is heavy in the chest rig and I'm not getting younger. Not venturing into the backwoods as far as I used to on hikes as well which really doesn't matter I guess. The bears that become accustomed to humans seem to be the issue it appears in a lot of confrontations.
I've been following a series on bear attacks that focuses on spray vs firearm.
Firearm wins every time but the tree huggers want you to use spray. We have some spray but will always carry a firearm.
Last year in Yellowstone, the huggers just about freeked out with the chest rig in the warm weather when the jacket was open on some of the trails and the added capacity without reloading is certainly a consideration.

M&P, XD, Rock Island, Kimber, Dan Wesson, and now Sig P320 are some of the options out there for 10mm.
Looked at most of those. Wasn't aware of the Sigs which I put at the top of the list of guns I like as well as M&P for reliability. I'll look at those as well.
Love the Kimbers as I competed with one for two years, but the capacity is the issue.
With some Taran Tactical mag extensions, the mag capacity can go from 15 to 17 +1 in the M&P. I like capacity.

Well dammit, I was going to say the Springfield XDM in 10mm but they freaking discontinued it!

The XDm is allI carry in 40 and 45 for human bears. I like it for the same reasons, the grip angle fits me like a 1911 but it is a high capacity weapon, unlike the 1911.

What do you have against the XDm's?

You never see them among competitors because the bore axis is high resulting in more barrel flip with recoil. With a game that can determine a winner in tenths of a second, target acquisition after the first shot for the second is vital. If it takes longer to get back on target, your wasting time.
They are very reliable guns and I have zero issues with them other than that.
