Me, AK enough said. There I said it.
Had a gas tube on a cheap arse AR blow up in me. Guess I could spend $ and get a factory name brand are like a Colt sp1 like they used in Vietnam and be good to go when shtf...
But, I'd need enough ammo made in USA, because import ammo may dry up and then make an AK a paperweight. Then again I don't see AR ammo drying up anytime soon. I'm torn.
You’re a naughty boi! But at least you own it!

Watched a TV program about what was the preferred of the two. Long range accuracy, AR hands down. Reliability, AK hands down.
CQC combat, hand to hand, the wood stock of the AR wins vs the plastic AR.
Rate of fire, the AR wins.
Overall, the TV program gave the thumbs up to the AR over the AK, but that's all subjective to the location of the fight.

CQC it depends on which version and maker for the AK. Many AK's are side folders that have just a metal bar for a stock or a composite stock like many AR's.

I would go with AR if SHTF here in the states as the ammo is more popular and easier to come by. Plus my grip has a bottle of CLP in it, and I have a bore snake that would fit right in a small pocket with a rag, so cleaning my AR in the field would not be hard. And the most important reason....

I don't own an AK yet :(

I've tried to like AKs. I've owned several. Even some "really nice" ones (yeah...that's like saying you can pick up a turd by the clean end, I know). Never had them long. They aren't nearly as user friendly though they've become better over the years with some American-style mods and ingenuity. The sights on the stock rifles generally suck. I don't care what anyone says, they aren't nearly as accurate as pretty much any AR.

I also don't get the whole "ARs are maintenance intensive". I guess mine never got the memo. I've ran mine really hard over the years in training at PDs, sheriff's departments, Thunder Ranch, Farnum courses, military, etc... Shot the piss out of 'em and don't recall ever having one fail due to being dirty...even when I neglected to clean them promptly. As a matter of fact, back when I was carrying one for a living I'd shoot the cheapest Wolf or Brown Bear ammo I could find, lacquer coated and the poly stuff. I made it a point 25 or more years ago not to own an AR that wouldn't feed the cheap stuff. All of my Colt's have devoured the Russian steel-cased ammo without issue.

I was also a "Red Hat" in the Air Force and maintained those guns for 4 years. And these were the old hand-me-down guns that were used to train admin types and nurses and mechanics...not real gun people. We rarely had issues with those guns that couldn't be fixed with a drop-in part.

You can have your AKs...I'll take an AR any day.

I did have one fail half-way thru the qualification shoot when I went thru the Denver PD Urban Rifle Instructor course. A trigger pin on my Colt walked out and I had to shoot the course with the only other rifle I brought. A real Yugo underfolder. I passed the course with the minimum score, thank goodness. Likely would've aced it had I not had the problem with the Colt. I don't recall why I couldn't fix it on the range but I couldn't get the damn thing open. Only failure I've ever had. Once I was able to open it and put the pin back in place I never had a problem with that gun again over 10 or 15 thousand rounds. It was an A3 Tactical Carbine, too. Nice gun...ban era LE only gun I bought used from a guy that was retiring and had carried it for 4 or 5 years.

Which AK?
Which AR?

Where am I?
Do I have adequate logistical support?
What am I doing and who's doing it with me?
What's my budget?

"Which one is better, AK, or AR?"
BOTH.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to add a 7.62x39 rifle to my collection though.
