My dogs love them as a treat and I am trying to incorporate them into my diet for the health benefits, but I am picky. For awhile, I was buying the fillets and manually removing the red lateral lines. However, it is a hassle and the fillets cost more so I am trying to work myself up to eating the more whole sardines that have the guts and head removed, but still have the bones and lateral lines. I've read before that the lateral lines in fish are bitter and not good for you, so i just wanted to ask if anyone eats sardines bones and all, or if it truly is better to spend the extra time and money to do the fillets as I was previously doing before I stopped.

Aside from my specific questions, how do you like to eat them in general for those of you that eat them?

i'm like you, if i'm REAL hungry i don't mind crunching them down.

BUT

i DEFINITELY prefer kippers over deenz. kippers are smoked herring filets, so you don't have to worry about bones or heads or whatever (i will say any animal head/face i have ever eaten is usually the most tasty so.....).

since they are smoked, you can find kippers with all sorts of flavors and in different sauces. i prefer the Crown Prince branded kippers, but i've eaten them all. you can get REAL cheap ones at target and walmart that come in lousiana hot sauce. I think they are Beach Cliff brand, but they are usually only $1.00 per tin. they call them "fish steaks" but they are the same smoked herring filets.

as they are smoked and in hot sauce, i just squirt some mayo in the tin and mix it all up. that makes smoked kippers in spicy mayo, and that's pretty dang good imo. you can put it on pita, toast, crackers, or just eat it out of the tin.

you can find them in mustard, oil, water, brine, all sorts. each one gives ya different flavor.

Right out of the can with crackers. Always was part of every fishing, hunting or outdoor adventure including working on the farm. Still carry sardines, Vienna sausage, tuna and crackers as a snack in my truck. Tabasco or other sauces for a change of pace depending on the day.

Used to eat sardine sandwiches. Lay them whole on a slice of bread or mash them up like tuna and mix in mayo add some lettuce on top and Bob's your uncle. You might want to consider smoked kippers as well. Probably the same health benefits and a little tastier IMHO. I like to warm them up a little in the tin by the campfire or on the stove, then just put a chunk on a saltine and a cold beer to follow it up. Makes a great field meal or afternoon snack.
