Haven't you and your wife been out of state for weeks/months at a time on your "retirement" job doing the roads?
:anyone:
___

That is mostly a summer job. Last year saw us out for the longest period because we were the only ones doing the state of Alabama. The company has a new, upgraded system for imaging the surface of the roadway, and they wanted us to do that state because of the wife's abilities with computers. Between doing the 12,380 miles of roads, doing redoes of roads that had problems in Alabama, then doing some redoes in Georgia, and then doing another 1800 miles in Alabama, we were out last year for just over 6 months. Normally, we are out for only 3 or 4 months total.

Bids have been submitted to Wyoming and if the company gets that contract, the wife and I have kind of been picked to do that state. We probably won't know until sometime in April as to whether we get it or not.

Working as a Derrick man on the work over rig on a job like that makes you latch a lot of iron especially if something screws up downhole
My only "patch" experience was repairing and delivering downhole pumps for MISCO Supply in the 80's Our motto was "Stay Alive Till 85."
It was funny, the MISCO company mucky mucks came to our store one night and picked up our manager. They took him to get a steak dinner, gave him a plaque for 30 years of service and left. THE NEXT DAY, a fella from the bank arrived and told us to give him the keys to the store and go home. We were all fired on the spot. I got a call from him a week later and was rehired to continue to fix and transport pumps for another three months.

Ahhh...yes...the fallout from the Penn Square Bank financial web -- lots of stories like yours from that time, especially for service companies. For those in the middle of not knowing - it was a nightmare, for sure. For those of us not in that industry - we saw what was happening to our friends and neighbors with increasing concerns the avalanche would overtake us, too.

OETA channel 13 has a good program about how Penn Square bank got upside down.
MISCO was a solvent company even building a new HQ in Wichita. We were deeply invested in offshore drilling pipe and we were paying all of the interest on that pipe but none on the principal. Well, when Penn Square got squirrely, all the banks got the vapors. The LA bank that held our note called it and we couldn't pay. Our other creditors followed suit and there was instantly one less supply company in the patch.
