I was reading the post about the gun being found and whether or not the police will return it to the person who found it in the event it isn’t claimed by the owner and reminded me of a time I had 2 stolen and at least one recovered.
I had my carry gun an M&P 9mm, sig 9mm and a SD40VE that I had just bought from a friend in my work van and after work I stopped by the Osage casino in north Tulsa for dinner and a couple drinks with friends, when I came out my van had been stolen, so I reported it to police and the lighthorse cops had a guy in the back of one of their cars for breaking into cars in the parking lot of the casino, pretty sure he was connected to my van, van wax found the next morning completely empty including my guns, my covid mask and earbuds ?
A couple of days later my business partner who gave me the M&P called and told me the ATF had called and did a trace on it and asked what happened, I contacted TCSO and the property guy said that yes it was there, I called my insurance co. And asked if I could claim it and they said yes because they don’t salvage firearms, so I called TCSO back and the same guy told me it was a mistaken serial number and wasn’t my gun ???? I know they had my gun and I know they kept it and I know that Is thievery, I even offered the money from State Farm back if I had the gun back. So will the guy that found the gun in OKC get it back ? Probably not

I don't know how it works in most departments in Oklahoma, but of the 3 I worked at in Colorado officers were NEVER allowed into the evidence vault except under very limited circumstances (ie: there was a large amount of evidence to be stored so help was needed moving it in). 2 of the 3 departments had civilians staffing the evidence vaults. The third required one of the command staff to open the vault and sign evidence in/out.

Wif had he Suburban stolen in Dallas. Her M60 Chief Special was inside.

The Suburban shell was found a week later.

The M60 was recovered 2 weeks after that. Hood rat knocked off a 7-11 and got caught. PD called me and said I could get it back, AFTER THE TRIAL

Trial was in 6 months.

Called Dallas PD, 6 months later. They said it "disappeared" from evidence locker.
Called DA, he claimed "nothing could be done."
Called CoPs and filed with IA.
Sept 1996, haven't heard from them

Long story, so for just the highlights, a set of brothers and another guy broke into my car as a buddy and I were walking back to it after quail hunting when we were seniors in HS. They were totally drunk on lime vodka, passing the bottle back and forth while everything after was going on.
All of our ammo had been expended on birds but we walked up and told them to GTF away from my car. One in the back seat came out with the fully loaded .22 rifle and pointed it at us telling us to get in the car.
Finally saying he was going to kill us he fired through the back seat at my buddy. The bullet hit a spring and ricocheted into an English Lit book on the floorboard. He then stepped out of the back seat and put the rifle to my head, chambered a new round and pulled the trigger. A sound I'll never forget was the firing pin hitting the rim and it not going off. Turned to my buddy and said we have to fight, so we did. We overwhelmed them as they were drunk and both of us were on the wrestling team. Buddy got the rifle away from the main perp and said lets go. We bailed out and then he also showed me the car keys he lifted from the pocket of the guy he had taken to the ground. Drove to the farmers home nearby that gave us permission to hunt and he called the Sherriff. They went to jail and finally prison.
The rifle remained as evidence for over a year until the court proceedings were over. My dad called the sheriff's office and was told all appeals were done and we could come claim the rifle.
It was a pump action 1890 Winchester with an external hammer. It's been at a couple ENS with OSA.
Getting home, found the rifle was still loaded by partially ejecting the round in the chamber.
The round was the one that misfired as it had a dimple on the rim. They never cleared the rifle.
Closed the action, went to the back yard and it fired.
Had years of nightmares after that which would probably be called PTSD today dreaming of looking down a rifled barrel with a bullet screaming down that barrel headed for me, waking up right before it got to me in a cold sweat.
So, long story although there is much more to it but my experience is that we got the gun back from LEO without any issues.

If they can verify the owner of a gun, it will be returned as long as they are not prohibited. If they are prohibited, they can sell it to someone else or transfer it to a family member.
