Tried the drill at 40 yards today, with my edc. Sig Sauer P320 Compact stock trigger, iron sights. 100 yd Military bullseye target. Got eight rounds on the paper, only five around the center line. Need to practice out past 25 yards.

I would be hesitant to engage at that distance. Maybe with my red dot? That being said, training at further distances will definitely be on the agenda going forward.
The furthest I have engaged targets is reactive plates at ~20 yards. I had to aim slightly above them to consitantly hit them all.

I’ve never considered a self defense pistol shot might be needed at that kind of distance. If I saw shoppers, innocents in the background, that would make it a no go on a dicey shot . With a carry pistol. Soon as I saw my target, first thought came to me was, “well, I can do better with one of my full size, longer barrel, better sights pistols”. But, carry the bigger one?

It's really not as hard as you think, at least not under stress. Just f'ing around with a pistol in one hand and a phone in the other, and no suppressor sights. I'm sure many here could do a lot better. Not 40 yards but the principal is still the same. Props to the good guy for hits under stress.

I think the ”under stress” part is the huge unknown variable.
Additionally, my practice with my CCW has always been at closer distances. I had never really contemplated having to take a 40 yard shot, let alone hitting 8 out of 10 at that distance.
Life would be so much easier if I could CCW an AR pistol with a red dot. :)
