The drought has sent a slew of cows to slaughter that wouldn't have other wise.
It's wide spread and in some major beef producing states. With the serious slash in animals , beef is going to see a pretty serious increase. Get your beef before additional life events take place. The days of $3 lb hamburger aren't going to be seen again anytime soon.

I’m going to suggest what I have before. Contact your local ag teacher and have them help you find a kid that will be trying to get rid of their show steer project after the last show.
My brother and I are on our 5th year of doing this and have yet to be disappointed with what we’ve gotten.

I will warn you that if you go this route just make sure you can find a processor with an open kill date.

Do you really need to hang it for 10 days?
I have butchered a dozen and ate on them that day.

Tools needed are a sharp knife and a hand saw and that saw is not really needed.
I have a meat grinder and that is the only fancy thing I have to process with.

I have mentioned if anyone needs meat ground and packaged I will do it with their help
of course.
They buy the paper and tape to wrap it of course.

I would suggest if you go the show calf route see if the young person can take it back home or wherever and feed it for another 30 days before having it butchered it will give the animal time to relax and make the meat alot better, done this for years when myself and brothers and sisters use to show wel always took our back home and always had atleast one butchered for the family.

I’ve done it both ways, and there’s a huge difference. If I’m spending the money for a quality well fed animal, I’m dang sure not cutting corners on processing.
