Anyone ever buy a cheaper pistol for vehicle backup?

Would any of you consider a 22cal for a backup kept in the vehicle? If you already carry a regular CCW, would there be any advantage to also having a 22 pistol on board that could be used for a backup self-defense pistol, but also just having a 22 would somehow be an advantage?

Seems most of you only have or can afford 2-3 guns and really have to think pretty hard on this?

I guess bottom line is if you wouldn't use it for primary carry/defense, why would you choose it for your backup/spare? Either it's up to your standard for the SD role or it isn't. I don't think the fact it's left in your car a bunch rather than your nightstand should be a deciding factor.

Nope, pistols make terrible vehicle backups. I like my vehicles to be capable of moving me from point a to point b in relative comfort.

For years I carried a worn out h&r 38sw. Didn't worry about someone stealing it since it wasn't worth anything, but it went bang every time the trigger was pulled and you probably didn't want to jerk my door open. Doesn't take all that much at 3 ft to change your attitude.

I have an older CCW I now use as a truck gun, but it is outdated on capacity and the trigger isn't my favorite, so I was considering getting a newer expendable pistol, to replace it. I'm a glock fan, but don't want to dedicate one of those or pay for a new one for a backup. However, I'm not talking about a Hi Point either LOL.

Some of the brands I was thinking about are Taurus, Canik, Stoeger, Ruger, or maybe S&W but I'd like to keep the cost down. Of those I mentioned, right now I feel like Taurus might have the best to offer for the money, but not sure so I'm asking for opinions.
Is your life or your loved one's life really worth skimping to save $2-300???? Save your lunch money a few weeks longer.

Well, full disclosure, I am intrigued by other options...I would love to try out a modern Taurus or a Ruger security 9C or others...BUT, you are right, even when reviewing the Ruger, it seems if you get a good one it is good, but they have quality control issues like a lot of others do except glock...even Sig has had their share of negative press on their pistol issues. Maybe I was just trying to find an excuse to try something other than a glock, but didn't want to spend too much. That security 9 full size and compact are such ergonomic looking pistols.

In a lot of cases, something is better than nothing.

How are you going to secure it when going into those ever-so safe “Gun Free Zones?”
I recently got a Hornady lockbox and think it’s a good product. Your post is rather similar to my current scenario. I’m in the market too and have resorted to carrying the wife’s S&W 642 revolver. Some of those you named sound tempting but might be a letdown. The Beretta APX1 is $200 after a MIR, Stoeger STR-9 is on sale for $200, there’s lot of bargains. I’d do what others suggest and get something more reliable. There’s a couple different models of Springfield 9mm for $350, which is about the the lowest I’d comfortably go. Quality and price wise that is. There’s a couple decent sources you need any help searching things up online. Good luck!
