I dunno what you guys are doing wrong. I hear "Uhhh ma'am" or see someone headed towards me or my car and the second I make eye contact they stop dead in their tracks and start apologizing. Of course, I'm pretty sure I have some latent anger issues, too so ... 🤷 I don't like being bothered.
Maybe now we really know why grumpy is always grumpy!

I got hit up in the parking lot of Tractor Supply this morning by a guy going person to person asking for a dollar “because I be haungry“.
I had a guy do that to me once when working across the street from a little diner. Told him I'd buy the blue plate special if he wanted to have lunch with me. He declined the lunch asking for the money saying he didn't like their food so I declined my invitation and went on about my business.

When we lived in Chicago some hobo's ...that is what we call them...came begging ...

My husband threw bucket of water on them...they wanted something ....thy never came back...

Now the other day a lady was counting her dimes and pennies change to pay for bread, potatoes, cheese and some chicken....no candy, soda, crap ....at Piggly Wiggly

I paid for her food and left before she knew what happened.

Two things I have recently seen:

I-40 & ML King, under the interstate overpass - a large SUV stops at the northbound light, just south of the overpass. 3 doors open, 3 panhandlers exit and take up stations at the corners.
One at the SE corner, two at the NE corner, there where the off ramp stops at the light.

Eastbound I-40, just east of the Agnew exit:
Large SUV pulls over on shoulder. Raggedy woman climbs out of passenger seat, opens hatch, drags out a shopping cart with assorted junk in it. Heads down to the end of the Agnew offramp to beg.

It's a business, like anything else. These 'panhandlers' are run by, well, pimps.

When I lived in Oregon the building our office was in was home to either a CPA or Lawyer (don’t remember which) who had a crew of panhandlers. They would have schedules of which corners and when. Many times the “pimp” would pick up and drop off at various corners for shifts. Quite the scam it was. If you gave them food they would usually refuse it or throw it away. They wanted cash only.
