That bike pictured is actually A single speed. 46x17 and that was a 50 mile ride.
probably a couple 10K bikes in that bottom pic but I'm riding a $250 Fuji single speed!

The Air Force had requirements? Who knew😂 just kidding, my dad was career Air Force and was thrilled beyond measure when I joined the Marine Corps. OKCPD used to have height/weight ratio requirements too but affirmative action changed that.
One of my friends when I was a teen was an OF named Earl. Earl was in the first wave onto Iwo Jima. We hunted together, and he told me that if I ever decided to enlist, I should avoid combat arms, as I would get my buddies killed. My dad was CaANG, comm troop when that meant carrying a Model 15 Teletype in addition to his backpack, just a few years after Korea and before Vietnam. My 1st and 2nd step-fathers were Navy, officer and enlisted in that order. And I was familiar with the "Navy Life Simulator." Take a dumpster, empty it out, paint it battle ship gray, and set up a bunch of bunks in it. Sleep in it, and have people come by at random times beating on the dumpster, and screaming incomprehensible phrases loudly on a distorted PA system, etc. 3rd step-father was Army. 101st Airborne. One of my buddies in high school's dad was a Warrant Officer in the Air Force. His stories sounded like something I could stand to do. And when I walked past the recruiter's offices, there was a sign that said "$326.10/month, 3 hots and a cot" in the window. That sounded good to me. Had family members betting $100 cash that I would not make it through Basic. Stayed for 24 years, retired as a Master Sergeant. (E-7)

Yes, the USAF had requirements. Some. Mostly shorter or easier than the Army, Marines, or Navy. Sounded tailor-made for me. ;) Funny thing, maybe, but I seemed to grow up into something at least resembling a reasonable adult. Sort of.

I actually identify with most of your post but this part especially ... I was 5"4', now I'm "barely" 5"3' according to the doctor's office. And ******* NO ****ING **** about those spinal nerves regenerating. 😰😰😰😰 I'm dealing with raging headaches -- again -- even though it's been a little over 6 months or so since they burned those cervical nerves. Ugh ...

I haven't ever been as low speed, high drag as all you guys. Worked some cattle, bucked some hay, went to the local honkey-tonk and stayed out too late. Took a few bad boys home. Took a few nice guys home. Rode a hog for a while, shot a little USPSA in my 40s. Wound up married to a fairly decent fella. Walked under the wrong tree and to be honest, given the stories I've heard from other people, I'm kinda surprised I'm still here. In all honesty, some days I wish I wasn't.

But ... A girl at work and I have formed a friendship and her kids are rapidly becoming my surrogate family. They call me Aunt Patti. I adore them all. Her and her husband are raising those kids right. For example, the boys (11 and 12) come do yard and garden work for me and I pay them) and her 5 yo daughter brushes Nero. She gets paid for grooming him and keeping him company. 😁

So many people would sit in the truck and play on their phone these days. Not her husband. He was in the middle of everything -- showing the boys how to adjust the lawn mower, how to string and use the weed eater, making sure they did a GOOD job. They, and all the people I meet at the store, who are just like them give me so much hope for the future. Things seem not so bleak when you look around and see that not EVERY millenial and GenX-er is the enemy. A lot of these kids know exactly what's up -- and what they are up against.

Opps ... Sorry for the derail ... Just grateful for what I do still have, I guess ... The Gods do work in mysterious ways.🤷
My dad & step-mom moved to Western Colorado in 1970, after my disastrous freshman year of high school and took my brother and I (and their four kids) with them. This was shortly after mom dumped the 2nd step-father. I got to work cattle, buck bales the old fashioned way, etc., and help milk cows, raise a garden, chickens, goats and sheep, pigs, horses, and ponies. Didn't get to do rodeo, but did ride in the arena where they held rodeos, and watch a couple of the folks in my high school there ride. Barrel racing, mostly. That is also where I lost my horse, essentially. He was a registered Appaloosa, who for some reason was cut proud. He lost the right side rein when I was across the arena from my dad, who was at the gate. I hollered at him to close the gate, but before he could do it, Diablo was through the gate, and turning to the right to head upcountry. I baled out on the left, and grabbed the bit, and he stopped before I did. Fool horse loved to run, and frankly I wasn't enough horseman for him. Dad took him to the sale yard the next day. I'm still PO'd about that, but I've been a parent for more than 30 years now, myself, so I think I also understand why he did it. I baled when I did because there was a steeper slope up the hill from where were were, and barbed wire at the top of that steeper slope. I was afraid he'd get snagged in it and hurt.

I've never had another horse, either. And now it's a good thing, because I have trouble taking proper care of my big old dog. Don't worry about the derail. Threads drift. That's what they do, that's just the way it is. Though I must say I never drift a thread. Or is it always drift a thread? Whatever! :)

Wow this thread has been colorful. Originally we were talking about physical fitness in relation to self defense. So on that note… yes it’s SUPER important!

I did martial arts a lot in my youth and 20s. People don’t understand how much a fight takes out of ya. It’s way different than just doing cardio.

I recently had an incident out here in a rural/farm area where 3 stray pitbulls came running in out of nowhere and attacked a family pet. I went after them with a shovel I was using at the time and basically “fought” these dogs for what was only a few minutes… I was absolutely winded, heart racing, literally had sit down and recover when things settled down.

When you combine stress and adrenaline with explosive physical activity that came by surprise, you’ll be surprised how out of shape you are.

Admittedly I need to loose 20-30lb… time to get my fata**’in shape again. This thread is inspiring me. Time to lay off the beer and midnight snacks lmao
