Why is Guymon not the hottest place to live right now?

My family and I went to the Black Mesa one year on vacation when my girls were younger. By the time we headed back for our hotel in Woodward, it had already started getting dark. We stopped in Guymon to eat, and around Slapout, it was darker than the inside of an ape's ass! My oldest daughter (she was about 10 then) was riding up front with me. We're driving along and she said, "wow! It sure is dark." I replied, "yup, it sure is," and then I turned the car's headlights off.

Scared her shitless. "TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON!!!" she screamed. :scream:

From Kenton to Guymon, I think we probably saw 2 or 3 cars. That was it! Very desolate part of the state.

I've always wanted to do a trip to one of the BNBs around Black Mesa. But if I'm driving that far, I'm going a little farther and staying in the mountains. We need to just do a day or two on the way some time. It's just hard for me to not take advantage of those frosty red river mornings in July/August.

You should have pulled the car over and spent some time appreciating the night sky there. Nothing like the Eastern 2/3 of the state. Black Mesa / Kenton area has the least light pollution in the state. That's why they hold the OkieTex star party there. I used to attend. Amazing what you could see at night. Here when small clouds drift through the sky at night they are easily seen because they are illuminated from ground light. Out there they look like black holes in the field of stars you are looking up at. You could see your shadow cast at night from when Jupiter was high in the sky.

In Kenton you can experience 4 seasons of weather in one day. The wind patterns are ridiculous and change constantly. One day we had measured 75 mph winds. That is the beginning of a F1 hurricane.

I know all about that big sky. We used to live in Raiford, Oklahoma. That's west of Eufaula on highway 9 about 10 or 12 miles. We lived on the Roy Fisher Ranch. There was some awesome sky there. I miss it.

Here, but occasionally There.
While a good number of folks here might snicker at bit at "little-ole Guymon," keep in mind that it is a big city compared to where I grew up in the Panhandle.

At its peak (with a helium plant and a Colorado Interstate Gas plant nearby), it had a population of 627 people. As of 2010 census, it was 324 people, and I'd bet it is a lot less now.

I went there once with a friend. We took a waste oil heater to his uncle. It was opening day of pheasant season. We got one pheasant. He let me have it. I don't much care for it. It was his mother's brother so I don't remember his last name. His first name was Tom I believe. He made sweeps for cultivators. Bought all I can remember. Met the guy on outdoor Oklahoma, Todd Craig head. Don't care if I ever run into that bunch again. Dickheads.

- All the benefits of OK laws, but closer to the Rockies
- 5 hours to Colorado Springs
- 5 hours to Albuquerque
- 2 hours to Amarillo
- Less swampy weather in the summers, proper cold and snow in the winters
- Drive 30 mins in either direction (N or S) and you are in a different state! You could eat breakfast in Liberal KS and then dinner in Perryton TX and you would have covered the same time/distance as driving around the OKC metro.
If I gave a darn about Texas Colorado or New Mexico maybe but I live in Gods country.
