I hunt year around, so that doesn’t bother me, but I am against it. When I read “another revenue stream” it sounded to me like they were saying it was a revenue stream for OK hunters. Which it will turn into that. Professional athletes use it. According to rumors the supplement derived from deer velvet makes your dick bigger, gives you multi day erections, boosts your libido, increases muscle growth, and helps with weight loss. All of this has been proven wrong with science, but anyone looking for an edge on their performance doesn’t care, and neither does traditional Chinese medicine.

The money to be made selling velvet, according to a website I just lost the link to:
The answer is: even there might not be benefits for users, it is still very good money for the sellers. Deer/elk antlers price moves currently about 120-60 USD / pound (or even lower).

For example, if you manufacture expensive, and now popular antler velvet concentrate. Which means that you use 4-75 pounds of antlers to make one pound concentrate.

That means: raw materials for 1 pound of concentrate cost is: antler price * extract strength. With this one pound of concentrate, you can make 453 bottles of 1,000mg Deer Antler Velvet extract. That’s pretty good business, as you can sell one bottle of this extract for about $60-150 USD.

For example, quick googling reveals that the current market price for 43:1 1000mg extract bottle is about $109-140 USD.

You know how when we made it easy for people to buy land and grow marijuanna in Oklahoma to help generate tax revenue, and we had a ton of people skirting the poorly written law and were overrun with cash loaded Chinese commercial and criminal organizations? We’ll this is round two, except instead of seeing grow operations everywhere we’ll just see organized groups of people hunting exclusively for any velvet antlers they can find. It’s also going to encourage more poaching.

I think that if for some reason you need to extend deer hunting season out longer so you have more opportunities to shoot at underdeveloped bucks that are about to start reproducing, then you need to find a new hobby. There’s plenty of things to do throughout the year that will tide you over until it’s deer hunting season. Buy a fast car. Or a boat. Walk your dog more. Whatever.

Velvet antlers don't do much for me, but I also don't understand the heat and wasted meat concerns. Native Americans and settlers didn't just kill buffalo, elk and deer and small game when it was cool/cold out lol. They needed to eat from April to October also.
We don’t need to hunt to survive, thanks to our well developed agricultural capabilities. We can hunt and have conservation in mind. Makes for a better time.

I would have a hard time getting an animal out of the field before it spoiled in August.

I would rather see more weeks it late fall or early winter.

That said, department of wildlife can set the seasons and manage the population.
Thats their job.

If we need more animals harvested, they can add additional opportunities and bag limits.

So far the management program seems to be working.
I certainly see more deer than I did 40 years ago.

I haven’t studied all the verbiage in this bill other than what was posted, but I believe the last statement “to create another revenue stream” is more than likely the driving force. I know there’s a bunch of guys on this board that are opposed to out of state hunters and think the license revenue doesn’t matter, but based on that last statement, I’m going to step out on what I think is a pretty solid limb and say the license revenue definitely matters to your state politicians.
In Oklahoma, all license fees go directly to the ODW. The politicians hate that fact as they can’t get their grubby hands on any of it.
The ODW recieves 0$ from the state legislature. All the funding comes from license fees, donations, and tax rebates from the Pittman-Robertson Act.

Not sure what the Chinese has to do with anything...
