So you would expect people to drive an hour or more round trip simply to get their mail? Doing away with rural post offices is a ridiculous statement.
No. I would expect the rural carrier to deliver your mail, sell stamps, money orders, and accept packages for mailing. I wouldn’t keep tiny post offices open that make less than $50 revenue per day. Oklahoma has 570 post offices with the majority of them generating less than $100 revenue per day. That’s ridiculous.

When I first moved to Idaho I had been hired by a trucking company (Matheson) that delivered mail. My job was to pick up mail in Lewiston, ID and Colfax, WA and deliver it to the Spokane processing center, then deliver the mail from there back to Lewiston.

I finished training (just a couple of ride-alongs to learn the route) and went out on my own. On my third day I was loading return mail in the 53' trailer in Spokane for the return trip to Lewiston.

A guy comes up to me and asked me for my badge. I told him I was a new hire and my background check wasn't done yet. Turns out he was an inspector, I think. He made me unhook the trailer and leave the secure area. Apparently this was a new thing because I wasn't the only driver who was new and got told to leave. Some guys said they'd been doing the job for two months without any problems. Not any more.

I had to bobtail back to Lewiston without mail. I couldn't wait the expected two weeks with no work so I had to quit that job. Too bad because it was a pretty easy driving job that paid VERY well.

Ok, I do like that idea. My only thought is how many more rural carriers would have to be hired? Wouldn’t the cost of the added rural carriers exceed the cost of operating a small post office with one employee?

As a special gift to those with postal complaints, the direct line to the Ok District Manager is 405-815-2100. No office should not receive mail for distribution. Even the ones that I think should be closed.

No. A rural carrier already serves that area as they do near other small post offices as well. I closed Pontotoc and Picher offices after going thru a lot of crap with congressional offices. Both had better service after.

Not that they will care that much but if a girl named Denise answers tell her Mike Cox said hi. The District Manager that I was able to contact previously to help resolve problems retired last month. Not sure who’s in charge now. Sounds like nobody.

Informed delivery clearly states when you sign up it may not be the actual mail piece being delivered today since it is fed by the pieces upstream hitting automation equipment. I was Postmaster in Ada in the early 90’s for a couple of years. Fired 2 carriers while I was there and a couple more were on the way out the door when I left to go to Shawnee. Some good people but a few lazy ones as well. I liked the town of Ada for the most part except on food stamp day when they were lined up around the block. Most of them appeared able bodied to me but not a lot of them applied when I had a vacancy.
Why would they?
You were so good at delivering their food stamps.

Update to my original rant: Our local post office employee called me this morning and said that the mail was not delivered yet again today. She is frustrated just as much as the customers because she can’t get any kind of definite answer as to what is going on. Now, a few of the customers are getting very upset and taking out their frustration on her. Our postmaster for the area is based in Lawton so I decided to call and see what is going on. I dialed the local number, and after about 20 minutes of pressing buttons, the automated voice said that somebody would call me back. About an hour later, I received another automated call with more buttons to press. The last statement was that the wait time which was approximately 10 minutes, and it asked what kind of music that I wanted to hear while waiting. Needless to say my frustration level was pretty high, I almost threw my phone out the window when I heard that question. I finally heard a live voice come over the line, but I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was somebody from a call center that I can only assume was somewhere in India or Pakistan. It took the lady three tries to understand the zip code coming out of my Okie mouth. The whole process was a complete waste of time!
So on a scale of 1 to 5 how would you rate your experience?
□1-Extremely satisfied
□2-Satisfied
□3-No opinion
□4-Dissatisfied
□5-Extremely dissatisfied
