Am I the only one?

My dad taught me how to sharpen knives when I was a kid. In fact, I was the one who sharpened his castrating blades before we worked cattle. So I know a thing or two about sharpening knives.

Now the issue. I can sharpen my Benchmade Shane Sibert Auto to shave hair, carry it everyday in my right front pocket for a month, never use it, and then when I need it, it won’t cut hot butter.

This is so frustrating. Does anyone else have knives that suffer from pocket dulling?

Mine do this on occasion. They're still actually sharp, but not like when I first sharpen and strop them. I did realize that I actually use my knife more than I thought in situations that could dull it, so maybe that's a thing.

If you are using a knife regularly its gonna dull over time and will require some periodic edge maintenance ...

I’m going to start carrying it in a sheath and see if it gets dull over time without use. Common sense says it shouldn’t, but we’ll see.

I’ve been carrying a ZT 0561 for several years, and it seems to dull from carrying.

I think the steel types and blade angle make a difference. There are some interesting ideas why this might be happening in this older thread: Do unused knives get dull?

I have microtech trodon combat I carry daily and its as sharp as the day I purchased it , but I don't use it for cutting stuff , I have a small gerber i use for cutting things . I don't think just carrying a knife dulls it based on that.

I read thru this and it caused me to think, why don’t broad heads suffer this? I wonder if a coat of cold blue along the knife edge would work?
