Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm here in Lawton/Medicine Park until early December for the USMC artillery school. I haven't seen much around for places to shoot and not much for gun shops other than the pawn shops in town.

I'll probably be heading to the gun show in Wichita Falls this weekend, more or less for something to do.

I'm looking to buy an AK, my first, and I'm hoping I can get some advice on what to look for, what to avoid. I know there's a lot of debate on the countries of origin and who builds them, but generally, I don't know much about them. All I know is people say they're fun to shoot and I see ammo for them is cheaper and easy to come by than 9mm and .45 acp.

Anywhere within a 20-30 minute drive to shoot rifles/handguns? Anyone that would care to show me around the AK? There's only so much a YouTube video can do.

Welcome to Oklahoma, and to the OSA. AK's can be had in many flavors; most of them are reliable. I typically don't go for the high-end (Arsenals, etc.); they're great and are usually milled, but at the end of the day it's still just an AK. I like the Yugo's myself. Alot of the AK's you find will have a canted front sight. The bottom of the barrel are the WASR's, etc. They're fit/finish is not up to par with the nicer brands, but they still usually go BANG every time. Now, hopefully someone will come along soon with more info than I can provide. ;)

Again, welcome to OSA

Welcome to the forum! I'm not familiar with Lawton, but if you get up to OKC, there are plenty of good deals and ranges. H&H on I-40 and Meridian, and Outdoor America on MacArthur I highly recommend.

Henderson Defense has their "certified" models that guarantee straight sights on all of their AKs.

I can get an M70AB2 with a pair of Yugo mags for just under $650 shipped. They also have WASR10s with 4 mags for about $490 shipped.

Classic Arms has Yugo and Romanian underfolders for $699.95 and $479.95. Gus said he'd cut me a deal on them.

Other than the Romanians have chrome-lined barrels where the Yugos don't and the Yugo has the thicker receiver, what else should I be looking for? Looks like most of the Yugos I'm seeing are Century builds.

I haven't decided on the folding/fixed stock yet...
