After getting a chance to put a few rounds through various .223 cans it has become very clear they generate and retain a tremendous amount of heat. My can is in and paperwork pending and it occurs to me that a cover of some sort will be pretty much mandatory with my intended use of this can.

Part of my intended use for this can is in practical shooting competition. After shooting a stage recently that flash hider on my SBR .223 inadvertently touched bare skin and got my attention, this is when I had a moment of clarity and came up with this plan.

So... can anyone point me toward a good source for a quality cover? Thanks in advance for the help.

I would seriously reconsider putting a cover on a centerfire rifle can. As you said above, they generate and retain a tremendous amount of heat. Any cover that would protect you from the heat would keep that heat in the can. That heat will significantly shorten the life of the can. If this can were going on a bolt action that was being shot slowly, maybe. There is no way I would do it on a semi-auto or anything that would be fired rapidly. Just my humble opinion, YMMV.

The cover you linked above makes my point. Their website says the following:

Warning - .223/5.56 cal use:
Our current products are not reccomended for long strings or rapid fire use with a .223/5.56 caliber rifle. We are in the process of developing new products that will meet the needs of these type of shooters. If you have questions or issues related to the use of our products please email us at [email protected].

this is a great point that I hadn't considered. Generally each stage requires 30 rounds or so with breaks in between. Would you think that 30 rounds every 30 to 45 minutes would still cause the problem that you describe? I may need to reconsider this idea.

Ang, I saw that TABS cover while looking around online. It looks like the best product of this sort available.

Thanks for all of the input guys!

I would not think that 30rds in 30-45 minutes would be excessive.

What about having a bunch of rings welded around it?

That would have the dual benefit of acting as a burn shield, and making it look like a ferocious Buck Rogers laser rifle.

Tony's (TAB) covers are pretty much the only option I would trust. But I also agree with CAR and they should be used sparingly because they will hold that heat in. Also, when I went to the practical match I couldn't use my can because the shot timer wouldn't pick it up consistently. You just need to have good discipline and watch out for it.
